  • It might be worth checking whether you need to get an electrician in to install this. If you need to pay an electrician, it would be cheaper to use one of the Govt schemes if one operates in your state, and get other stuff thrown in as well.

    • and if there is no scheme, and nothing will be thrown in, and I need an electrician, then what?

      • The electrician is probably going to cost around $100 or more. Some do a service call for less these days, but not many. The service call usually includes the first 15 minutes.

You might want to put the price in the title..

And directly link to the product, not your home page.

      Also from the product page:

Save between 5-40% off your typical energy consumption!!

How exactly does this product do that? Can you offer any substantiation to that claim?

Are you offering refunds for anyone who purchases this device and doesn't save at least 5% off their energy consumption?

      • If it requires power to operate, then surely it'd be increasing consumption! :p

The Wireless Energy Monitor runs on batteries, which are included.

The Wireless Energy Monitor is a tool for households to understand what appliances are using the most electricity and how they can save. If a household does nothing but install the unit nothing will be saved. From several research papers it has been shown that once households understand where they can save, savings of 5-40% were seen.

  • which brand is Watts Clever. havent heard of it. any one here have used it?

    • Watts Clever have been around for many years, their products are sold in Australian retail shops and online. They specialize in energy efficient products and provide 12 month warranty on all products.

  • as per posing guidlines, please link to actual deal not your home page.

    how do these work?

    • Thanks, my error on the website address, now fixed.

The Wireless Energy Monitor - Basic comprises of a small Sensor / Transmitter Unit and Sensor Clip, which measure your household electricity usage at your electricity meter, and a portable Display Unit which receives information from the Sensor / Transmitter Unit via radio frequency signal. Both units are battery powered making installation extremely simple and straight forward.

The Sensor / Transmitter Unit uses magnetic field sensing technology to measure the current being consumed from the small magnetic field that is present around your electricity meter power cable. This reading is converted into the power being used and is then transmitted wirelessly to the display unit which may be located up to 40 metres away. (The actual distance depends upon the number and density of walls and floors the signal is transmitted through).

Households are able to see their energy usage in real time as their lights and appliances are turned on and off, as well as daily high and low usage readings and monthly and yearly totals. This information allows people to understand the impact of the various electrical devices in their homes in terms of their direct energy cost to them and the harmful effect of their CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.

Through using The Wireless Energy Monitor you can save money on your electricity bills as you become more aware of the energy you use and help reduce your impact on the environment.

      • You might want to read this if you're happy to continue to advertise that the device will

Save between 5-40% off your typical energy consumption!!

LOL… yeah bit a a grey area there.specially as your not saying "upto"

seems like a decent price, would love one that i could log via the PC so i could show some graphs etc, and serve it out to the WWW.

        • smart-meter trials around the world by energy utilities have verified that when people are able to see realtime energy consumption from the inside of their home, they will modify their electricity usage patterns, which produce the claimed savings.

But you have to work out how long it will take for the cost of this device inc shipping, fitting, battery replacements, to pay for itself.

dont forget that the cost of energy is forecast to increase by greater than cpi, so projected $ savings will increase.

  • Is there a way to determine if an electrician is required for install before purchase?
Something we can look for in the meter box?

    • if you have a clean meter, and can access the main line comming down in should be ok. you just clip it round the cable.

    • you need to be able to see the active mains wire before it splits up into the various circuits, to do this you will need to be able to access the rear of your main board, unless you can the incoming street supply in the roof space etc. if you are not familiar with this stuff, you will need an electrictian.
apart from any legal requirements of course.

you may be able to combine the task with some other electrical work you are planning to do, otherwise don't expect much change from $100 for the callout and the 10min it takes to do it.

  • Any specials on 3 phase units?

    • No, not at this stage.

  • I am sorry, but in Queensland there is a government initiative. You pay $50 and you will get a wireless mornitor, five energy saving bulbs, a water saving shower head, a remote control power point and an inspection and installation by a licensed electrition. Even though it is too good to be true, I still signed up for that. Anyone else heard out this?

    • I signed up for it a while back but the guy who came wasn't an electrician. He took a look at my power box and said there wasn't enough space to attach the clamp. He then tried to change my shower head but couldn't unscrew the old one. All my bulbs were already CFLs. So … he left without getting anything done.

I then saw an efergy on OZB for $30ish so I bought it and clamped it on myself.

edit: at the time you could get a cashback for that $50, so it was effectively free!

      • +1

I think I posted that efergy deal. High five!

        • +1

          hi5 :D

      • I'd have made a report to … whoever the body is that deals with it. We had already installed cfls so hunted around for some cheap incandescants before he came so as to have some spares. :)

I'm told if you're in Brisbane city council area they will also cover the $50 - I'm guessing this is by way of a refund but you'd need to look into this for yourself. They apparently claim the RECs on it to.

    • I wish victoria had something like this, but doesn't…

    • Anyone know of anything like this in SA???

    • I live in WA so this incentive wont help me

    • Yep, got the $50 deal in QLD…the energy monitor is great and you can even set an alarm when you're using more than the rate you set.

The bulbs and shower heads were useless to us and our service happened before the remote control power points were introduced…although I've heard the remote control power points switch off at random times.

  • Single tariff use only :(

    • Meaning you cant enter basic rate, then off peak rate and that stupid rate inbetween?
Bit pointless it monitoring and recording the $$ of power if its all at one rate.

I guess you just ignore the dollars and look at Kwh only

Still on the fence after looking in my meter box and seeing that I will have to get to the back of it
Looks like its just one bolt holding it in, but probably should get a sparkie in

  • Seems like $50 is a more appropriate price.

This one also has a graphical display for a year of historical data:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/p/mieo-3-5-lcd-wireless-home-elec…

    • Is there a low-cost one that can be hooked up to a computer so usage can be logged or synced with a website?

      • This model can not be linked to the computer, hand held screen shows data.

    • 100mA means around 24W accuracy at best. Unlikely that the Power Factor is taken into account too - but probably satisfactory in use.

Should you have one please write up your experience in a new WP Home (/Green) thread - should be appreciated!

  • I recently purchased a Watts Clever EW4008 from Jaycar the other day, it's 'the same' but has a USB output,
they're $119, available for $99 from a few other places, but you have to wait for shipping

This unit, the EW006 - http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MS6160&keywords=powe… is available from Jaycar at $79 - or just $10 more than this 'offer' but from a fairly good bricks and mortar store

they're fairly good, you just need to make sure you find the live wire at your meter to hook the clamp too!

  • +1

If you want to log the data and output to the WWW, then use the EnviR.
Lots of info on Whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1460922

There was a Christmas deal on it too. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/57745
EDIT: NVM, it looks like smartnow has dropped the normal prices to be the same as the OzB offer

    This is my output http://pvoutput.org/intraday.jsp?id=4091&sid=3211

    • Nice! What's your setup like? Do you use the bridge or a PC?

      • I used an old notebook and run PVBeanCounter as the interface between the EnviR and pvoutput.
