Negotiating at JB Hifi - iPhone

I'm sure this must be one of the more frequently asked questions, although I couldn't find it in a quick forum search.

I'm looking to buy a new iPhone and I'm keen to hear if it's possible to negotiate at JB. I've heard that the answer is no (because it's at cost, or loss-led, or something else), but I also hear the occasional story of someone doing it successfully. I know from personal experience that I was fairly easily able to shave some dollars off an Apple Watch.

So, is it doable? And what's a reasonable amount of movement if it is?

(Thanks in advance)

Anecdotal comments either way aren't going to help you in your case and situation and person/manager you deal with etc. Ask and see what happens. Don't expect much off though, certainly not beyond the 5% gift cards.

Why post here and waste everyone’s time? Just go in and ask them, worst case they will say no.

Perhaps too fearful of rejection or embarrassment.

    It's possible.

I was buying it as a present for my friend (I don't much about iphones) so when they came out of the back with the phone, i just asked my usual 'JB question' about whether they could do a better price. I don't remember which model it was or exactly how much I got off, but it was $100-200 or so. (The final price at the end was still a little over $2k! 😑)

I have a feeling the guy knew that I would've bought it regardless of discount or not and just gave me a discount anyway.

    • That sure is a special "friend" to deserve $2k presents!

You guys are the worst! 😂 I was literally dying and someone looked after me for a few months! (Not THOSE needs! haha)

  • In my experience they usually try to offer a discount on accessories instead.

Any reason you want to specifically want to buy from jb?

    • thats cause no matter the discount they have huge margins on accessories so never would lose money on them.

  • From my own recent experience, it's not impossible to get a very slight discount but they'll try to find any reason not to give it.

I went to two different stores, first one flat out refused to price match due to promo code (fair enough, as I only just learnt it was in their policy) and they wouldn't negotiate at all on RRP. Second store, I had a much nicer salesman and even though he couldn't price match he was able to take a bit off the full price. It was less than 3% off, which I believe is likely their staff price but I also had discounted gift cards to use so pulled the trigger.

YMMV depending on the store and the salesperson. I've read some ozbargainers were able to price match Costco at JB, but I didn't have the same luck.

JB price matching is garbage. When they first expanded nationwide they used to say "ask for a JB deal". These days they do everything possible to avoid a deal.

  • If you have access to commercial pricing you’ll get a small amount off

  • I've heard that the answer is no

Why bother????? Go buy it somewhere else. You are on obzargain, after all. There is ample opportunity.

Call their sales line at 13 52 44. Usually they are willing to give a bit of discount, as compared to the salesperson in store. Spoken from experience.

  • We just bought an Iphone 12 128gb from GG, Price matched telstra's $100 off, bought with 5% GG Giftcards Ended up @ $1262 11% off

Not a phone, but I asked the sales person "what's the best you can do?" on a fridge and and quickly did a look up on the system and said she can drop $150. I wouldn't even call that negotiating.
