Do Jewellery Shops Offer Free Cleaning Services?

Do all jewellery shops offer free cleaning services for jewellery?
If so, if I took something to Tiffany and Co, would they clean it free or charge or had to be one of their products?
Does anyone know any good places in Sydney to get some jewellery cleaned?

Why not find an ultrasonic cleaner for less than $30 and clean as often as you want ?
They're really great for coins and other collectables as well.

    • where is this $30 cleaner? link please. i see them for $80

Aldi sold them a few weeks ago. My local had a couple on Saturday when I went

      • I see these at 120 minimum at electronic stores…..

    • Do that actually work? Can you recommend /link one?

    • Be aware that these claws that clamps the gems are quite soft and mallable depending on the precious metal. If you have very small gems held by very fine little claws they will work loose if cleaned ultrasonically. For fine and intricate jewellery, use a toothbrush and brush lightly with strong detergent. It's mostly dirt, dead cells, human grease and bio matter. My dad is third generation jeweller we don't use ultrasonic on very small gems.

Having said that, ultrasonic clean plus hot water and ph neutral unflavoured detergent as surfactant is the way to go most jewellery.

Cleaning is also done after polishing. Polishing is another big subject where you can do chemically or with abrasives.

  • I doubt Tiffany and Co would touch any jewellery that wasn’t specifically Tiffany and Co, I’d be surprised if they even touched Tiffany and Co if you didn’t buy it from them directly.

    • they do (before covid) got rings from Hong Kong, went to Hawaii and they clean it, pre covid!

      • Can confirm, Japan bought tiffany cleaned for free in Aus.

For what they charge for a piece, getting you into a store twice to buy into their culture is worth the cost of cleaning.

      knock off items
      .

    • Since when is correcting spelling, a bad thing?

      • -1

Because it's not really incorrect, it's just the American version, like colour vs color.

        • Jewellery vs Jewelry

Canada is in a unique position, being heavily influenced by both our American neighbours to the south and our historical parents, Britain. In the battle of jewellery vs jewelry, this unique identity is really highlighted in that Canadians use both variations.

Ain't we Ozbargain, and use the Queen's English?

        • I am not a Murcan. Neither is this site.

I know some people aspire to be all things Murcan, but really? why set your bar so slow? Why not aspire to be better than gutter trash?

          Just my 2c

          • @oscargamer: If something as little as this gets on your nerves, maybe raise your bar?

And using an American word doesn't mean you aspire to be that, whats wrong with you.

Lol do what I did - find a jewellery shop manned by two old ladies, throw them a bit of chat, brighten their day up a bit and ask like this “hey I’m sorry to bother you guys but I’ve just bought this used jewellery for my girlfriend and I’m wondering the best way to clean it?” they won’t let you leave without cleaning them for free.

Yeah this works, also if it's a quiet MH store and it's staffed with older ladies. Easy to be polite, have a good chat and laugh and they'll do it for you.

Also you have to be conscious that in the ultrasonic, it's meant to be close to boiling water with some detergent. If your jewellery is coated it might strip it and should realistically only be done on pures.

      • Actually the water that goes into the ultrasonic is tepid but it does heat up in there but not to boiling point.

The vibrations will cause loose stones to come out. A store should know the porous stones that shouldn't be put in there. These days though there are several idiots about.

My husband has always used quite a bit of mild detergent with some ammonia. It works quite well.

I bought an trasimic tank from Innovations and it is ok but his works way better. It was a commercial tank for our business.

Regarding free cleaning - we used to charge. Every so often stores put out signs offering free cleaning. It is offered to bring people in and then they will find any issues such as loose stones, claws that need retipping, worn bands on rings etc.

  • Suggestions for a good cleaner for rings?

      • I'll buy that to wash my date.

        • Make sure to wash both hands in case it's a double date.
