Hyundai Santa Fe 2015 Diesel Blowing Black Smoke

Hi All,

Just need a bit advice I started noticing my car generating quiet a bit of black smoke from the exhaust but only when I hit accelerator hard to over take or jumping on free way. Normal driving is fine.

I thought initially it's normal as its diesel and the back of car around the exhaust area is black, I have noticed this on other similar model diesels. Is this normal?

This might be a stupid question, I'm not really good with cars

A few notes:

I did have the transmission completely replaced last November, it won't have anything to do with this?
Car has always been serviced on time at Hyundai, it has 176k on the clock.

I usually put diesel at Cosco or Appco

Thank you

  • Pretty common for a diesel to smoke when giving it a bit, injectors might need cleaning/servicing/replacing or could be a restriction in the intake (dirty air filter perhaps). Try running an injector/fuel system cleaner thru it.

But as the old saying goes, "If it ain't smokin, it ain't pokin"

    • Thanks mate, I'll go past super cheap and see if I can find any fuel system cleaner. I'll need to google find where the air filter is.

      • If it gets serviced on time, they should be replacing it so I don't think that will be the issue but generally when it's blowing soot, there's excess fuel in the mixture to burn cleanly.

    I found the problem.

always been serviced on time at Hyundai,

    • Only did it due to warranty

        I found the problem

Only did it due to warranty

You don't need to go to a dealership for servicing to retain warranty

I know that's what's they say, my whole transmission was replaced 3 month out of warranty, if I didn't get it serviced their they would have declined it.

The service manage also advised easiest way for them to wiggle out of a warranty claim is you service it else where

Black smoke = over fueling. It’s usually a “not enough air” issue.

Maybe check your air filter isn’t clogged and all the intake hoses are in good condition. One may have a crack/split or internal failure. Check around the turbo that all the hoses are fitted correctly and all the clamps are tight.

Outside of these checks, there isn’t much more you can do if you are not good with cars and you will need to have it looked at to see if it’s a problem with the turbo or injection.

  • think of black smoke as $5 note flying out the exhaust. The simplest solution is don’t accelerate so hard if you can avoid it, but it’s worth getting it looked at. Not at a dealer, find an experienced diesel mechanic that understands Hyundai.

  • L/100 km fuel consumption increased recently without change in your driving habits?

    • Nothing change at all same consumption, same power

Do you have low power? As pegaxs has suggested, normally a lack of air. You have a variable vane turbo, if this gets stuck, boost is not controlled properly, causing smoke.

    • Do the DPF / diesel intake / decarbonisers work?

It sounds like some chemical love and a decent run up some mountain switchbacks might help

      • Op doesn't have a dpf, but as a general rule, all that stuff is snake oil. Some manufacturers manage dpf regens well, some don't.

    • No power lose at all. Car drives completely normal

      • If it didn't smoke before, and gradually has, check air filter first of all as it's very cheap and easy. It's not a D40 Navara, it shouldn't smoke like crazy.

  • I have the same vehicle and so does my mate. Happens to both of us when we mash the accelerator.

    • Really, I was told just to expect it with diesel cars

      • Same. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • You can try to force a DPF burn off cycle. If that doesn't work and the smoke is excessive my bet is on the copper seal washers on the injector seats need replacing. This is a fairly cheap job that can be fixed in a couple of hours. Are there any error codes stored when you read the odb port?

    • I'm not really good with cars

      Ain't gunna happen

That and copper sealing washers on injector seats don’t cause black smoke.

    • Thanks mate, how do u do a dpf burn off cycle

      • +3

        You don't have a dpf.

And even if they did, a blocked DPF has so many other symptoms and “blows black smoke” isn’t really on top of that list.

  • May be an engine problem.!!
