Citibank Plus - Subsequent Identification Requirement

Hiya All

Have had a Citi Plus account for several years but recently was contacted by Citi to send (via post to their PO Box) certified ID documents as my details on file was incomplete. Have no issue with providing the documents, but sending ID docs in the post is risky, I think. Citi have advised this is their only process (so no: uploading online, visiting an office or using their Aus Post office identification process). Citi say they need to store the documents. So is sending ID documents via post just a "Citibank thing" or do other US banks have the same process? Anyone else getting the same request? Thanks in advance for your comments.

How were you contacted? If it was by phone, I would phone them back by looking up their number on their website and check it wasn't a scam.

Tried to apply just now for testing, it says:

At least two forms of ID to verify your identity electronically. Alternatively you can have your identification verified at an Australia Post Office.

    You prolly got a scam.

  • Call them and ask why send an email explaining if they resist change the bank! Their loss.

  • I have received a letter in the post, an email and a SMS from them asking for the same information.

    I expect it is real.

but sending ID docs in the post is risky

    What risks do you perceive?

    • I'm a Nigerian Bank representative. I need you to PM me your ID documentation so I can transfer you your $1 million unsolicited inhertance from another customer of ours, a prince.

Don't worry, OzBargain's message systems are fully secure.

    • Yes, Auspost is always so reliable & people never have lost, got their documents misdelivered. These are certified copies of identity documents that can't be used for identity theft. :)

  • Ask them to send you message via their citibank messaging platform did confirm they are who they are. Might be a scam

  • So initial contact from Citi was via email. I contacted Citi online and they confirmed they had sent the email and needed the documents to comply with legislation. The risk I perceive is from an ID theft perspective if it gets in the hands of the "bad guys" enroute.

    • Oh and when I expressed my concerns of sending via post, they unhelpfully said they would pass on my feedback.

  • Whirlpool says the same so this is real Citi but targetted customers not all otherwise we will read this in newspapers

    • That's right. My friends got this too. The common factor is that they all used their citibank card for overseas transactions over VPN; either for Netflix or websites like g2g. I'm guessing their system has tagged them for money laundering transactions or something along the lines. Hence such strong identification process.

      • None of those factors apply in my case. My guess is it is in response to recent, more stringent legislation, so they are going back to older accounts opened prior to the change and getting their house in order.

  • Got similar guff from ING … logged onto the website and it popped up askin for more ID Stuff…. some new Gov Co Regulation

  • Citi is not alone in this. I was recently asked to verify my ID again by NAB (after having my accounts for many years).
