lastminute (although I find their prices for some reason tend to be higher)I have had most success with zuji and expedia for international flights.
Sometimes you can then go direct to the airline website.
As your destination is domestic and only has a few airlines going to it, just go to virgin/qantas/jetstar/tiger website
Hi Sarbear, for domestic flights you can use either the direct websites of the airlines (www.jetstar.com and www.virginblue.com.au) or you can use an aggregator such as webjet.com.au.
I prefer to use webjet and then go directly to the carrier's website to book. The reason I don't book with webjet is that they charge a fee but add no value at all, other than the ability to compare all flights side by side.
Give that you want to go in the middle of school holidays, the best bet for booking your flights is RIGHT NOW. Don't wait. There is unlikely to be any kind of sale except maybe a last minute one and you don't want to go with those unless you are OK with taking a gamble on going on the holiday at all, or if you have to go you might end up paying for fully flexible fares (the highest costing fare class) cause that's all you can get.
In order to get cheap flights during school holidays, you need to have your holiday destination, dates and times planned out AT LEAST 12 months in advance, so that if a sale does come up (typically 6-9 months before the holidays, if it comes up at all) then you can book and pay right away.
This is my advice based on working as a reservations agent for Jetstar for quite some time. It kind of sucks that that is the way it works but just remember, they are in business to make money and the times they make the most and have to discount the least is during school holidays.
You might be able to sort yourself out for some cheaper overall fares if you are able (due to children's ages etc.) to travel in separate parties. If you need to book 5 tickets, it will be harder to get a good deal than if you can book in small lots of 1-2 passengers at a time.
I am going to make a separate informational post about airline pricing for everyone's reference so check that out. It will explain it all and I will also answer questions as well :-)
