ALDI $5 Sim - Transfer Number to New SIM? Does This Mean $5 Top Ups?

Hi all,

I have been using the $5 Aldi SIMs for a few years now. I started so I could have a service while travelling to receive bank texts but now I just like to have a backup service.

Normally I just get a new $5 SIM and activate it as a new number, but as I have gone through the process there is the option to log into my current account and transfer my existing number to this SIM.

So it makes me wonder - if I do this, will I have essentially topped up for $5 instead of $15?

I'm not fussed if I transfer my old number or get a new one, I was just curious if anyone else had done this and it has just worked as a $5 top up?

Cheers.

  • You can transfer a number from another provider. Not one ALDI sim to a new ALDI sim.

  • Do you get credit when you do a replacement sim? I believe that is the feature.

  • +3

I do something similar, I actually use an old phone with a number that I never share, for banking and Two-Factor Authentication, to help prevent SIM swapping and identity theft.
I did what you are thinking about last time, I bought a new $5 Aldi SIM and transferred my "secret" number to it online. The new SIM worked, but I found that the $5 credit wasn't applied to it.
I contacted Aldi support online about the missing credit, and they said:
"I can see that the credits were not applied due to the fact that your service had expired.
Please be advised that once the service has expired after 365 days you will simply need to top up in order to keep service active for another year. Purchasing a new SIM and processing a SIM swap does not extend the service expiry.
I can confirm that I have now added $5 to your number and have extended the service expiry for another 365 days."

In short - this isn't allowed, but you might get away with it once!
As my "secret" number is registered with a number of banks and other sites, I would prefer to keep the same number at a cost of $15 a year for the top-up, rather than registering a new number every year with all those sites. I consider it is a worthwhile investment to prevent SIM swapping fraud.

    • Firstly - that’s a great security practice that I am now tempted to copy.

Secondly - thanks for sharing your experience. It was exactly what I was after! I don’t think it’s worth the hassle for me, especially as I don’t need to keep the number, but great to hear what you went through.

      Thanks!
