[NSW, QLD, SA, VIC] Exchange $30 of Excess Solar Power for 1 Slab of VB (Switching to Diamond Energy Required) @ Victoria Bitter

50

Here's a deal for all those Fair Dinkum Full Grown Aussie's. If you have solar panels which generate excess energy which would normally go back to the grid, instead of getting credit back, you can exchange it for slabs of VB. Every $30 of excess energy can be exchanged for 1 slab of VB bottles or cans. 1 slab would normally set you back $48.90 at Dan's so if you love your VB, you can score it for nearly 40% off retail price. Of course your individual circumstances need to be taken into account and switching to Diamond Energy may not be worth it for the cheaper VB so keep that in mind. The current feed in rate is 10.2c/kWh.

Elgibility:

  • Be aged 18 years or over
  • Be located in VIC, NSW, SA or QLD (Energex, only) and connected to the grid
  • Switch to Diamond Energy
  • Be a residential property with a maximum of a 6kW DC solar system (i.e. no businesses)
  • Not be receiving government or distributor funded feed-in tariff
  • Meet the further eligibility requirements at www.vbsolarexchange.com.au

Every quarter after you pay your bill, the excess energy is added up and for every $30 accumulated, one slab of VB will be sent out. A maximum of 30 slabs can be obtained until the offer ends on March 30, 2022. Any feed in credits not exchanged for beer slabs will be paid to you by CUB in the form of a prepaid debit card at the end of each quarter after the beer slabs maximum is reached.

NB. I have very little knowledge about home solar power so keep that in mind too!

Are we returning to the days of bartering now?

    • +1

We might soon, once hyper-inflation kicks in.

      Beer economy.

  • +1

That's not much of an incentive 😂

I was part of the market research for this about 6 months ago hahaha. Can't believe they went ahead with it!

Reminds me of a country in Eastern Europe, who only voted to join the EU because voters were given bread and a bottle of beer.

        Because he/she thinks that they're al-LOUD to?

Maybe they’re already on the beers and don’t know how loud they are?

Interesting concept with just 2 major flaws:
    1. VB is dog's piss
    2. Origin and AGL offer nearly twice the feed in rate at 20c/kWh

      1. Don't you take it to someone else's place and drink their beer?
      2. You can't drink the Origin rate. And I wouldn't touch AGL for anything.
      • +1
        1. True.
        2. I don't know, the AGL rate (although a little coaly and gassy) is not bad ice cold on a hot summer's day….
        • AGL is certainly cooling (as an investment, and as a provider).

I agree with both, but the old 20c tariff is gone.

If you have a 20c/kwh deal, check you still have it.

Mostly because AGL/Origin are not getting the NEM rates they used to, back in 2017-2020, and covid decimated & collapsed the primary/secondary production industries that used excess solar during the day.

Which has caused the solar FIT to collapse, temporarily due to oversupply of renewable power, affecting NEM pricing. And it’s leading to various “solutions” like shutting off solar export or charging to export to handle the VPP upgrade and capacity handling for excess market energy events.

Mostly because these events can cause NEM prices to invert, and you end up with negative price events where you could be paid to use energy for a 5 to 15 minute window. If the market has too many oversupply events, the “wrong people” will be getting paid…

      Sic.

AGL has shifted to 17c, Origin is 16c. Some plans are grandfathered in, but not for long as they are expiring around 2023-2025 IIRC. You could luck out, but the plans are getting worse, not better.

You also need more complicated plan comparisons if you have solar, because your summer/winter usage is going to be erratic if you want to use your old bills and energy usage with 2020’s and 2021’s rates and export changes. Wattever is a good site for that kind of thing, compared to the government’s comparison website.

Most plans and rates will be changing after 1st April as well, and quite a few of the “15c+“ deals are becoming export capped to the first 5kw, which barely offsets the daily supply charge(s) of $1.05 on some Smart/ToU plans, then falls back to 7-8c/kwh.

      https://www.solarchoice.net.au/blog/which-electricity-retail…

You will probably still get the best deal with a 17c or 16c plan (those that aren’t export capped), or, try your luck with Amber Energy / Discover and their market-pricing plans, which can also affect solar feed in rates.

The up/downside of Amber/Discover is the market shifts radically in a 5 / 15 minute window during peak times. You do have to balance $0.04c/kwh periods versus $0.60-$1.72/kwh at 6.45pm if there’s some kind of emergency or weather event. There’s no insulation against peak, but conversely you do have the potential for negative price events where you can get money for taking surplus energy from the grid

      • I got solar a bit over a year ago and I'm with AGL and still receive the 21c feed in tariff. I haven't looked into rates that are out there since I signed up and it's interesting to hear that things have changed. It's something I suspected because the deal seemed a bit too good to be true. I've saved about $1000 in one year which is about one fifth the cost of the install which I think is not bad. I thought it's just AGL and Origin having such a poor record investing in renewable energy that they feel this is something they could offer to make them look good. I have no idea how long until I'll be kicked off this deal, but now you've mentioned it, I'll have a look at what's out there. Hopefully it won't be for a while and by then there will be more options around community batteries or batteries will get cheaper… Or maybe this VB deal is actually a winner?

      • You can still get 20c with AGL and Origin. Just not off their website. And they don't seem to kick you off it.

  • Must be limited time special for April fools Day.

    • Except this was posted on 31 March.
