Money Overseas in a British Bank Account under My Name - How Can I Access It?

This money was left for me after my Grandmother passed away, in an account under my name for when I turn 18.

I am now 18, how can i access this if I am currently living in Australia? Do I need to send them proof of identity or do I physically need to go to UK to get it? (definitely not going to happen lol) .

Anyways I did open a UK account with Transferwise but that's as far as I have gotten.

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

What did the bank say when you asked them?

"Have you contacted OzBargain yet and what did they say?"

  • You could set up an Amazon UK account, pay from your UK pounds and ship to here.

what did the trustee of the account say when it was handed over to you?

  • If its bank account in your name, can you not just register for online banking on the bank website, then transfer the funds to your Transferwise virtual UK account then convert it into $AU.

Would you ever want to live/work in the UK? Or even travel there? You are only 18 so you may well want to. Especially if you have family over there.

If I were you, I’d just make sure it was in a savings account and earning some interest(presumably it already is). If/when you next head over there it will be there for you. Unless you really really want it over here, you will need to convert to AUD.

Whoever was named executor of your Grandma’s will be able to help you gain access.

    • and earning some interest(presumably it already is)

      haha, yeah 0.1% lol

  • Let's start with which bank. The first thing you should do is attempt to call customer services of the bank in question. Best to do it in the afternoon/evening in Australia when it is first thing in the morning in the UK otherwise you may be kept on hold a long time.

Customer services may try and terminate the call if they don't see you don't have any passwords or credentials. You might have to try and find another number.

The difficulty is that even if the name and birthdate matches how do they know the account is yours? If the residential address on the account is different from yours then you're pretty much out of luck.

If you can establish ownership of the account then transferring money out shouldn't be hard, especially with TransferWise, it's just a local bank transfer in the UK.

      Very valid points.

I would think OPs problem is neither not access (internet, card etc) it is rather satisfying proof of identity.

  • Firstly, you need to get internet banking for the UK account.
You'll likely need to contact the bank to get this created.

Then when you can log into your account, just transfer the money to your AU account. You might need international transfer details such as SWIFT details but your local bank can tell you about that. I don't see why you need Transferwise or any other third party.

Then close the UK account if you're transferring the full balance.

are you trying to access it secretly or something?
because otherwise i don't understand why there isn't someone directly involved like an executor or trustee who you can ask?

thanks guys for the heplp. will be calling the bank tonight, just wanted some guidance first. appreciate all the help!

  • You will probably need to provide proof of identity, copy of Passport, birth certificate, license and or similar notarised by a suitable person. This will have to be sent to them to verify that you are who you say you are, then they can take the next steps of setting up internet banking
