Laser or Inkjet?
I settled on this from TGG commercial for around $300
Brother MFC-l3745cdw

I wouldnt expect cost effective with ink usage for <200. then again there arent many ink cost effective printers for >200 either.

2500 page Black&white
1500 page colour
Set of decent ink cost about $40-60
How many pages do you get through on an average before ink replacement cycle?
there's several epson workforce models currently available for under $200

I have an earlier one in the range.
As for cost effectiveness - the only way to do that with any inkjet printer is via a CISS - continuous ink supply system
My suggestion:
* Contact https://www.rihac.com.au/ via email [email protected]
* give them your list of requirements such as "Am looking for good printer recommendation ( colour) which is less than $200"
* they will tell you the best printer you can buy meeting your requirements that they sell a CISS for
* price check the printer online
* buy the printer from where ever is cheapest (and that has retail locations if you hate returning things by mail just in case)
* set up the printer with the included ink cartridges
* use up the cartridges
* order the CISS for that model printer from rihac (it will cost about as much as the printer, but you are playing a long game)
* install CISS
* never buy ink cartridges again, just incredibly cheap ink from rihac
* laugh at printer manufacturers
Are generic toners available for Epson printers? I know they are available for Brother and Samsung.
I prefer an HP inkjet. Simply because I enjoy the challenge of trying to print one page and buying ink with my weekly shop.
If you want a basic model:-

the next step up:-

but I would save just a little more for this baby:-

Can you tell I love Canon printers?
I would then go to https://www.inkbank.com.au/ and buy new ink tanks & ink tank resetters & inks, so you can fill the ink tanks yourself. I have been doing it this way for yonks, put a strainer in the plug hole of the sink, so you don't lose the little plug & wear gloves & start from the lightest shade of colour to the darkest, easy
Is there not a printer that
- has a paper tray storage so store paper but not have to leave open
- can scan by opening the top
- has generic inks to be purchased for cheap for occasional uses
- has colour and black (preferably seperate csrtirdges)
- easy wireless connection
- and is not a large printer
- can print double sided

Good reviews - tick
Under $200 - tick
Color - tick
Cost effective - unsure of what is your definition of cost effective
