Re the [PC] in title - this one is Windows-only.

Also the current freebie is: https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p/creature-in-the-well, also only for Windows.

[PC] means Personal Computer which is technically the correct terms. Windows and iOS are operating systems, and these days there are also PCs that are not Apple computers or do not run Windows but Android.
But regardless, they are all Personal Computers.
[PC] is used to differentiate from [PS4], [XB1], [Switch] (yes I know they are all consoles but they are still vastly different and one cannot emulate the other which is the case for PCs.).

Fair enough, then let's label it [Win], [Mac] or so, just like we don't mark PS4-only games with [Console], because it's irrelevant to Switch and PS5 users.

See above. It is pretty clear and established by now. I would love to be able to write into every post [PS4/PS5] as the games for PS4 also play on PS5 but there are also character limits for the title in case you did not know that.
Imagine a deal that is for Windows, Mac and Linux/SteamOS, PS4, PS4, XB1, XSX, Switch:

          [Win/Mac/SteamOS/Linux/PS4/PS5/XB1/XSX/Switch]

There is no more space for the actual deal.
And then in future, PCs running Android.

As an old fogey, the term PC used to be used to distinguish any computer using an IBM architecture from than Mac. When you went into a game store, you would either select a PC or a Mac version of the game.

In this context, the PC label in the heading is correct. Not sure if the meaning has evolved over the years, but the first Google result supports the argument that a Mac is not a PC.

          • @sonome: I agree, they used to be easily discernible between PC and Mac. They now use the same Intel architecture these days, so Mac's are now PC's and just a different brand shipped with MacOS installed.

If you're on Windows and want MacOS, then you can 'Hackintosh' it.
If you're on a MacOS and want windows, then you can 'BootCamp' it.

No input on the labelling though. This is a free game from Epic and can be easily added to your account without any OS limitation. As a mac user, I run both and expect that the majority of games are Windows only.

If you go into any gaming store, the Windows games will be in a section "PC Gaming". If you go to any website that sells games, the Windows games will be titled "PC Games".
Whether it is accurate, it's still the default "standard" way to describe games on a Windows platform.

      • PC is historically short for IBM Personal Computer, and evolved to include IBM clones. More recently PC was used to differentiate from Apple Macs.

PC = IBM clone, Mac = Apple. Simples.

  • Cheers!
