Air Conditioning Technician Misdiagnosed Fault - Now Wants to Charge Me Another $900

Had an issue with aircon showing an error code, technician came over misdiagnosed and replaced some parts and filled the gas charged me $990.

After a month ago the same error appeared again called the same technician he came over and suggested it's a leaking issue not parts and quoted me for another $900.

So shouldn't have a warranty do I have to go ahead pay again? Is there a ombudsman for this in Queensland?

  • What did the AC dude say when you challenged him?

    • "unfortunately happens"

    get a 2nd technician opinion?

But then they charge for inspection etc

  • How old is the air con unit?

    • 5 years

  • Is this another Gumtree technician that you found OP?

Yes, you should contact the Air Conditioning Ombudsman. I've heard he's a really cool guy.

Seriously though, if the unit is out of warranty, then you are at the mercy of the tech as to what to replace/repair to resolve the issue.

Perhaps this particular tech is ripping you off, or perhaps he honestly believed the work he initially charged you for would fix the problem. Possibly a more experienced tech would have thought to do some kind of pressure/leak test, but maybe that would have been additional cost anyway.

If you have lost confidence in the technician, then get a second or third opinion.

    • He's only a cool guy in summer. In winter he's hot, damn hot.

$990 is a lot for A/C repairs. A 2-3kw split system with install would only be a few hundred more max. If it was leaking your unit would probably have no more than 0.5kg of refrigerant in the compressor so maybe $100 for the gas at cost. Not sure about the parts replaced but unless its the controller I would suggest youve already been taken for a ride

Twice too, could just have gotten a new AC with installation with that money…

Now all 💴 go up in smoke air.

Who says it would be suitable for OP's room? Might be a larger area.

Did you google the error initially? It was probably a board in the outside unit. What parts did he replace?

    • +1

Probably the board in the outside unit? Why?
That’s like suggesting the reason a car has broken down is because of the battery without any knowledge of what has failed.

      • -2

If the inside unit was presenting the error then that's probably ok.

  • Sorry OP, cut your losses and buy a new unit. You don't want to be spending over 1k on a 5 year old AC.

  • Try airtasker…

  • Ask for a quote for a replacement.

A cheap 4kW Mitsubitshi is about $700 wholesale exGST, so $1200 to $1600 installed depending on the business. Most other brands are cheaper.

  • Are the parts he replaced faulty? was the gas faulty?

    • Wasn't faulty the issue was with the gas that he didn't fix at first place

      • you're not making sense. Ask your parents for help

    Ask your parents for help

He did, and they told him to go away and post the question on OzBargain.

Seee he approved I did ask before :-)

  • What exactly do you want to take him to the Ombudsman for? He charged $900 for his service on each occasion and that's the price to be paid to him, that's what you own to him.

If he has misdiagnosed the issue, then you need to prove that and maybe then get another technician in (and pay them) to prove it. Then you can consider making claim against the first for incorrect works etc.

That being said, $1800 is in the realm of buying and having the unit replaced.
