Quality Light Sturdy Umbrella

I'm old enough that I'm tick of broken crap. I want to own an umbrella I can trust to last many years.
Being in Sydney it's not like we have a lot of storms.

I want something light, big 2 person canopy. Doesn't have to be compact. Short enuf to bring into a car w/o poking someone's face off is good.

I have some wormwood umbrellas. 1 left from 3. I don't love them. They feel a bit heavy. The components are OK, some plastic parts age and die. The handle isn't good when you are carrying other stuff like shopping. Both when umbrella open and closed.

Anything good you recommend? Online reviews are mostly US based companies.

Do you care what they look like? If not, the cheap and ugly Bunnings-branded ones are huge and pretty sturdy. I keep one in the boot at all times but have a regular small black retractable one for here and there walks.

It doesn't strike me as something to really spend time and effort on in Sydney for the occasional use.

    • Do you have a link to the bunnings umbrella. I can't seem to find them on their website.

I saw some people using it the other day. They seem to withstand the wind pretty well

Doesn't seem to be on their website but there's always pallet loads of them at the front entrance along with their other branded merchandise.

    • looks, umbrellas look the same to me!
the Bunnings looked very similar to the wormwood ones. Are they as heavy?

It's for when we have to go out, and it's raining. Say kids have classes and I have to burn 2hrs outside. I want to do some shopping, but I literally lose use of 1 hand carrying an umbrella. Even when it stops and I close it.

Have you tried a rain coat? Both hands will be free!

  • I use one of these when I need a large umbrella. I’ve had it for around 5 years - very sturdy!

Just make sure that you always leave it open to dry after use otherwise it will eventually rust and fall apart.

    • +1 for Golf Umbrellas. I got fed up of the compact umbrellas being blown inside out and providing no protection.
Spend a bit more money (say $50-60) and but a solid golf umbrella. I've had my Nike one for about 5 years now.
It's a bit of hassle carrying it given the size, but at least it keeps me dry when it does rain

  • I know it's probably not useful right now, but if you ever see the big umbrellas at Aldi, grab one. I've had mine for about 5 years, and never had an issue with it, even in super strong wind. Otherwise, as others have said, the Bunnings one is great, if you don't mind the colour and branding. :)

  • BTW, those 'reversable' ones any good? They show using one to get into a car, but wouldn't it turn into a cup as you close and collect lots of water you then pour onto your seat?

    • They're fine. You'd want to give it a shake just before you get in your car, like you would with a normal umbrella.

Only issue is you can't use it like a cane/walking stick, because the end is basically the little metal tips of the umbrella canopy all together.

    You need a Blunt Umbrella - https://bluntumbrella.com.au/

Expensive to buy but they last forever.

They're heavy, though. Solid but heavy. But unless you lose it, it'll probably be the last umbrella you'll buy (apart from more for your family).

      • There's a Coupe version if heaviness is an issue (for full-length umbrellas)

      • Wow yes. My current golf is like the exec. But 600g vs their 900!

  • I saw Costco sold good retractable windproof umbrellas that seem quite sturdy.
