Moneybookers.com scam? Update (not a scam)

Hi,

I just received an email to confirm my sign up to moneybookers.com I havn't signed up to this site. I am shocked because it came to my private email account which I only use when dealing with seemly legitimate companies. Has anyone else at oz bargain recieved this email after using any of the deals on this site recently (free phone holder, alwaysonsale civic video vouchers, I recently bought the mouse deal at MWave and paid with paypal). I think it must be a scam but I have no idea how they got my email address. I have no idea who bidone barbara is, its not my name or an alias I've ever used.

here's the email…

  • Don't know about that email but Moneybookers is a legit site. Used it once, no problems.

Maybe someone misspelled their email address. I get emails intended for [email protected] where my email address is [email protected].

  • Yeah I guess so, either way I'm not going to click the link. Its just my personal email address is fairly unique being with internode.on.net and having a weird address sthorley either way I'll give moneybookers the benefit of the doubt and declare them scam free!!!

  • Hey freakyterrorist, what ended up happening with this? I just received the same email this morning? I just noted that you purchased something from Mwave. I recently also purchased something from Mwave. Have never had a problem with them before though.

    Cheers.

  • I've also received this email today (8th/Oct) and I've also recently bought something from MWAVE for the first time using the email address in the message. Has anyone else received this recently? The similarities are too uncanny to be a coincidence imho…..

I've never heard of this moneybookers.com website before.. is it legit?

  • I am asking MWave to come here to comment…

  • Looks like it is a phishing email.

Are the URLs actually pointing (it may be masked) to moneybookers site or another site?

  • Hello freakyterrorist,

Mwave is not affiliated with Moneybookers.com at all, i am sure what you recieved is a scam and i would suggest you to just ignore it.

We keep all our customer emails safe and private, we do not sell/rent it to any 3rd party company.

What I would do is properly do some virus / spyware scan to check if you have any trojans or spyware on your PC, and in the meantime i will double check with our development team if there are any issues in that area.

Also note: If you use your email to register on forums, community websites, myspace (diaply your email on your profile page) etc… they could have got your email address also.

    • Actually, I would grab the headers of the email and and report it to internode instead of just ignoring it. :)

  • This is all rather interesting. I recieved an identical email addressed to bidone barbara myself this morning.

This was sent to my main ISP email address which has never recieved a piece of spam in its lifetime. The only places this address is used is privately for registration at two large Australian tech forums and Internet retailers (Mwave being one in common with the other posters).

It's also highly unlikely I have any sort of trojan or spyware considering I'm running Linux and using a niche browser.

The headers and addresses in the email all appear to be genuine and from Moneybookers and it's not sending me anywhere to enter personal information, but it seems rather strange what anybody could gain from simply trying to associate my email address with their account?

  • I have now also received one of these emails addressed to Adam Hillier …
