Looking for cheap Australian Open Package

hi all,

I am still pretty new here so hopefully I post on the right forum.

I am from Sydney. SO, basically me and my partner is planning to go to Melbourne 2 weeks from now and have not bought anything yet. We are planning to spend half a day watching tennis ( Australia Open ) . We are going to leave Sydney on Thursday late afternoon (after 6pm) and be back on Sunday the 22th evening. The date is fixed because of our work commitment.

I've been looking around for a week or so and the cheapest ticket I can find is around 220$ per person using Tiger Airways and decent accommodation would be roughly around 600$ for 3 nights. Tennis ticket would be around 100$ a person..

If there is any good deal you guys have in regards or airplane, hotel accomodation (decent hotel please) and ticket around that date, I would appreciate it.

Thank you so much OzBargainers.

  • Have you tried the ones listed on the AO site? http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/tickets/packages.html

  • Re: TIckets - I find it is good value to get Hi-Sense Arena tickets for the weekend that you're in Melbourne. We got ours for about $45+ pp and I think you would still get to see some of the tennis stars there.

Ground passes are cheaper ($29+ pp) but you don't get allocated seats in the Margaret Court arena. First in, best dressed and you would have to protect your seats. There are other courts that you can go to, to watch a game - but they could be less exciting.

Re: flights - I tend to use frequent flyer points to save some cash… so if you've got those, consider using them. Booking tickets only 2 weeks away tends to be quite an expensive exercise.

  • thanks neil and amlyn.. i will have a look .. any other suggestions?

  • What day are you going to see the tennis?

I go to the tennis every year and usually end up getting tickets off eBay or ground passes. The first few days you can see the more famous players playing on MCA or the other 20 or so courts. That's an awesome experience. Seeing top seeded players playing on a small outdoor tennis court is a fantastic and unique experience. Friday would be a good day for a ground pass. Weekends with a ground pass are hugely packed, that is when getting RLA or Hisense tickets can be better.

As for accommodation, if you want to save money then you don't need to stay in the city. Melbourne Park is accessible with a nearby train and tram so you can save a bit of money by staying outside of the CBD. Alternatively, you can check out Airbnb. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/category:travel
