Video Doorbells...Orion?

Looking at getting a video/camera doorbell and a chime.

Ring seem great, but are pricey. Also need the subscription.

Orion (Bunnings) look very cheap. Any thoughts?

Can I use my Synology media hard drives as a recorder for it?

Other brands any good and not crazy expensive.

I have the Ring, and I find that it's real value is that it's very polished and a lot of the value is that it's a cloud recorder.

I've seen other people using cheaper doorbells but I'm not as convinced it's really worth the saving.

Separately, I don't use it, but I would find it hard to believe if Synology integrates with anything other than its own cameras.

  • I'd recommend Ring. Subscription is only $4 a month and you get the confidence of having your video stored remotely and securely for 30 days. You also get more features on the Ring and tools that decreases the chance of false motion positive like zones and Face Detection. Ring is also very useful if you're on a macOS as you'll get a preview window of the front door when it detects motion or door bell presses. If you want to hook this up to Synology, you'll need to scans its protocols to see if it's compliant. But in most cases it should be ok as they most often use Hikvision parts. That is also another reason to avoid these cameras as Hikvision are plagued with security issues and there're heaps of tools online to gain remote access to these devices once you know the S/N or MAC Address.

  • I also have a Ring and love it. The subscription is worth it and it is only a small fee, but well worth it. Like "No Username" said, there is a MacOS app, as well as Windows one. So you can have it hooked up to your computer for notifications, it doesn't have to be for your phone. You can even us your computer to talk back as long as you have a microphone configured.

I bought the power supply for the Ring as well. I had it on battery but found it draining a lot and quicker than the reported 3 months or so. Powersupply just sits in the roof which is super handy. I would recommend the Ring over anything else.

I wish Ring integrated into Google Home, but obviously with Ring being an Amazon company that wouldn't happen. A mate has the Alexa and said it works really well with the Alexa system.

  • Thanks. I’m heading towards the ring. It’s just the price!
    - Orion (Arlec) $99 with a chime and no subscription
    - ring wireless $119, chime $59 + 4/month.

Wish I could find the ring one cheaper somewhere, but it seems to have set prices!

    • I've been using Eufy doorbell for a while, no subscription and footage stored locally in the homebase
