Electric Heated Pet Beds? good bad safe dangerous?

Should I get my old dog a heated pet bed for winter? She can't get up on the furniture anymore.
Kmart just added this one: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/heated-pet-bed/3445830

Does anyone have one that they recommend?

Could my dog get burnt or something?

I've already got a non-electrical thermal mat thing (also from kmart) that's supposed to reflect body heat, but it doesn't look very effective and it's not popular with any of the dogs.

They're just like an electric blanket. There should be no problems with them unless your dog can't get up, has thermal regulation issues, or likes to chew on cords.

The hard part from experience will be getting them to take to it. Cats are much more partial to it than dogs imo

      has thermal regulation issues

      hmm dog does have cushings…?

I know this doesn't help a lot but depends on what you're buying. Cheaper stuff is riskier in my opinion - for something that is on all the time, while you leave the house, in fabric that burns easy, and the cords looks fun for a bored pet to chew on… I'd spend more.

The mat you've tagged is 10W and is designed to be on all the time. I've got a 6W heated mat insert (https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0009YWLCM/ref=ppx_yo_d…) and with a thicker blanket on top of it, keeps the blanket just a few degrees above the rest of the room. Works well, my cat loves it. I'm not claiming this mat is the best-of-the-best but K&H are a well known brand that have been around for a while.

      K&H

that's neat, i wonder how the thermostat detects that the pet is on there?

i think i'd have to put it inside something for when dog decides to make a nest. do you put it inside a bed as well or just the blanket?

This K&H mat is on 24/7 - some mats seem to have a weighted circuit or something similar (I didn't like the idea, moving parts and constant on/off seems like it'll fail in time). For this one you'd definitely need to have it covered in a thicker blanket, it's very warm to the touch and wouldn't be comfortable on skin but works really well as an insert into a thicker blanket/mat.

  • my dogs would chew the cords.. are they 250v?
