Finally, a Baiju deal in a bottle that doesn't look like toilet cleaner.

    • +5

still doesnt mean it wont taste like toilet cleaner.

      • made my day, mate, made my day

now I don't even care Essendon or Hawthorn

I will just pour some toilet cleaner to drown my sorrows

Very strong and direct characteristic. Often who drinks this would more likely a direct person. Not good to mix with anything, but very good to drink straight while eating Chinese style BBQ (eg lamb skewers) with friends.

    • +4

Much preferred downing 2.5rmb longnecks over street BBQ!

Little over a year ago and I was doing it debating if this 'thing' will pass in a few weeks. alas…

  • scrispy

Is that even a real word?

    • +7

      smooth yet crispy? Scrispy…

    • +3

      It is now

    • It's a perfectly cromulent word

Something about paying more than 20 yuan for erguotou rubs me the wrong way.

Just like paying more than 10 for Tsingtao.

    • +5

$23 of it is excise tax and GST…

      • +1

I should post a photo from last time I was in China, at one of their supermarkets.

71.20 yuan for 5l of this stuff.

        That's $14.

And this one is relatively expensive.

I called it "The hangover aisle"

Ed: Oh, and it was the 52% version there.

In China, this is really cheap to buy - less than AUD $6.

      So are the cigarettes.

      • +5

Yes tax on cigarettes is extremely high in Australia.
Please don’t get me wrong. That it’s cheap in China doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not good quality. It’s actually very popular in China and has a long history.

        • Yea mate. The tax is unreal!

      • +2

very true, $2 cigarettes from China are selling for $27+ here

You can get a slightly smaller bottle of this at Asian liquor stores for around $11 a bottle. Same brand green bottle.

  • +10

It’s cheaper buying from Asian Groceries- around $10 - in the cooking wine section. Exactly the same as this one selling in Dan Murphy: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_ER_2000003617_69067…

    • I found it pretty amazing that you can sell these highly potent (and drinkable) liquor as cooking wines without attracting excise duty. I don't think they remotely quality as cooking wines based on their salt/sugar content which typically present in cooking wines to make them unpalatable for drinking.

    • +5

      i get it for $7.50
but you missed the Murphies review:

"You will not be disappointed when you buy this genuine Red-Star ER GUO TOU. You can tell the difference if you tasted the look-like bottles before from the dodgy groceries."

im not paying $40 to find it if thats true, the 7.50 does the job well

    • I used to buy them years ago from those Chinese grocery stores. Chinese uses Baijiu as cooking wine, the same way as the westerners using wine for cooking.

  • It is a ripoff don’t buy it. $50 for a case of 6 in China.

Guojiao 1583 is good value in Australia, if you can get it below $150, even cheaper than in China. And tasted really nice - if you can ignore the young age.

    • +14

Go and get it from China then.

    • +1

      I’m pretty sure it’s guojiao 1573 instead of 1583.

      • Diff company or just different product from the same company?
