Was It Worth The Risk? (To Ask Optometrist to Bulk Bill)

As most of us would like, we like to save.

When I booked myself into an eye check, I asked if they bulk bill and the lady said it's up to the discretion of the Optometrist.

I booked, instead of calling around as he did 45 minute appointments and checked everything.

He recommended an eye relief mask, as my eyes are perfect but I complained of sore eyes.

The mask was $40, part of me was saying no inside because I knew I could get it cheaper online($20). However, he actually mentioned because I was buying the mask, and I asked about bulk billing he'd bulk bill me!

The whole appointment cost me $40, instead of $75-90+ a mask. I also supported a local business and he was great to deal with.

I suppose sometimes it does pay to take the risk! It worked in my favour this time.

How about everyone else?

more twists than an M. Night Shyamalan movie…

  • i rarely find people who bulk bill

  • I was curious when I saw "The Risk" but was disappointed when it turned out to be only a few dollars.

  • What was the question or problem to solve?

    • Basically, what risks have you taken in terms of saving or not and has it worked out?

      • Asking gives a person an additional option.

By not asking you don't get a potential new option.

Unless a person has a social phobia, then it maybe hard to ask…

      • How was there any risk at all? If they didn't bulk bill, you paid like normal. There is zero downside.

I still don't know what the 'risk' in this scenario is…

So what favour did the guy do for you?
Most places automatically bulk bill for an eye test and as you said, the fair price for the mask was only $20 anyways.
Look at the other side of the coin - he was prepared to rip you off for $20 by charging double for the mask.

    What the hell.

I've never paid for an eye test, I didn't even know that was a thing.

Think OPSM will only bulk bill once every 2 years (and they push that eye retina scan thing), but Last time I went to Specsavers, they mentioned I could get an eye test every day of the year if I wanted bulk billed through them

I've also never paid for an eye test.

My Optometrist always bulk bills and they are privately owned not part of of the Specsavers or Luxottica conglomerates.

Was under the impression Medicare covers one eye test every 24 months..

  • more money in their pocket if not bulk-billed. i think you are missing the point of bulk-billed service.

Wasn’t worth the risk reading this thread.

  • Optometrists always bulk bill dont they? I've never paid in any states I've had them in.

  • Every optometrist I visited a few weeks ago trying to get a on same day appointment did bulk billing.

    Spec savers
    Opsm
    And 3 other independents

Did I manage to get in after visiting 5 optometrists?
    Stay tuned….

I didn’t know paying for ay eye test was a thing?
I’ve never paid for one in my life and get them yearly.

  • Welcome back everyone!
If you’ve read this far you have come to the right place to find the answer to the question.. did i get in to an optometrist for a same day appointment?

Before we answer that, lets recap on what happened at the begging of my last comment.

Every optometrist I visited a few weeks ago trying to get a on same day appointment did bulk billing.

    Spec savers
    Opsm
    And 3 other independents

Did I manage to get in after visiting 5 optometrists?
    No

    Was it worth the risk?
    No

    Was it worth writing about?
    No

Pm me privately for movie rights and or tv series rights to the story.

  • How do you even find someone that doesn't do bulk billing for an eye test?

You got scammed OP and hard.

  • I don't understand, what is the risk? That they will say 'no'?

  • bulk billing is common. eye tests are not rocket science. they used to be done by opticians in the good old days and they are still the same but now we need to get them done by optometrists.

  • What is the issue?
