Fraudulent Credit Report Entry

So what I know:

  • I got a alert via Equifax that Woolworths Mobile had made an enquiry.
  • I had an identity document of mine used for a Woolworths Mobile Account.
  • It happened on the 11th of March.
  • Woolworths won't tell me anything about it other than it was my details and ID.
  • The account didn't get created but the hit on the file remains.
  • Woolworths say I need to do a stat dec and police report before they do anything.

Now, the day before (10th), I test drove some cars and handed out my licence with copies taken. One of them I took the car out without the dealer and I got back to the dealership very shortly after 9pm which would have been the 11th on the east coast. I told the dealer I liked the car and he said he would email me the availability of the model with the various options first thing the next morning. This didn't happen.

Is this likely to be a coincidence? It's been a very long time before someone else has been given a copy or even looked at my licence.

If anyone signed up to Woolworths Mobile recently at which stage does it confirm the licence details? I would check myself but I don't want my details to confuse the investigation. If someone could post a screenshot or two that would be great.

I definitely took the car bit longer on the test drive than he probably thought I would. My working theory is he might have stressed out he let a new car go out that was late back and loaded drivers licence details in to a site he knew to confirm it was real. I do have his card and googling the guy shows he hasn't been a car salesman very long.

I find it very odd that the order wasn't completed. Doesn't make sense unless they were just checking the details. The amount on the application matches the phone on the homepage (Samsung A51).

I am actually not sure what would you like Ozbargain communities to do for you.

    • Tell me if that seems sus or if I'm a lunatic, that doesn't make any sense.

  • I would start by reporting to the cops now not in the morning… they have your info… They may try again or do other nasty shit with your info.

Please file a police report OP for two reasons:

    • Your credit report obviously
    • But more importantly evidence that people are trying to fraudulently claim to be you.
  • You sound like a lunatic.

    • No sure why your downvoted. It was one of the legitimate options. :-)

Looks like you been to more than one dealership…

  • You got the car back to the dealer at 9pm??? What time did you take it out?

    • I was wondering… A dealership that is open at 9pm in Australia? Was that a 3h test drive?

      • Dealership was open until 9pm.

Went out about 8:35 or so from memory.

        • Ok, 25min for a test drive is reasonable…

        • That makes a lot more sense.

Sometimes I forget that not everywhere is like Brisbane, where everything closes at 5pm.

I would suggest that you get a new license, and have your current one cancelled. Whilst you go to Police, maybe check with them what they suggest. If they have used it once, they will use it again, probably for a credit card maybe. Sure way to stop it would be to have the license number reported stolen and canceled. You will incur a fee, but would be still cheaper.

I’ve put a 21 day ban on all the credit agencies. Any hits on my file will be denied.

I can extend it if I need to.

      • This is very sad. Probably we should deface the copy of licence we give to anyone. We could write the date and the purpose for which it was given across the face of the licence image, and also delete crucial sections of the information, few digits from the licence number, and Dob.
