Help Me with My Home Internet Setup

Hi All

Looking for help from smarter minds than mine.

Currently I have a Belong 4353 modem/router for my NBN. I have a 5G modem that I got with Telstra that I solely want to use for internet.

In my very simple mind I believe that I can ‘bridge’ my 5G modem to my belong device and continue to use that as a switch (as I have Ethernet devices connected to it) and for wifi. Can that be done?

So in simple terms. Use the old device as a wifi router only and the 5G device as the modem.

Sorry if I’ve missed info to assist. Let me know what would help

  • I don't the Belong 4353 device allows this feature. I know that it support USB internet dongles to be plugged in (via USB port on back of the Belong modem) but when you navigate to the settings page, you can only enable this feature if the WAN connection (NBN internet) is actually down i.e. offline or in an outage.

Are you trying to use your Telstra 5G modem as a pure modem and leverage the Belong modem as wi-fi router to avoid buying another router i.e. use Telstra device for 5G internet and use another device for wi-fi/routing purposes?

    • Correct. So just need the modem to be a modem and want my existing router to just be a router and wifi

      • I don't think it will work with Belong device (for the reason I stated above). At least not when I tried it recently.

You would have to consider buying a new device that allows USB internet dongle input. Something like this I guess (depending on the wi-fi area coverage you require you'll need to go with a better one or alternatively wi-fi access points):

        • I’ve got an Ethernet port though in the 5G modem?

          • @bemybubble: What make/model is the 5G device?

            • @PLA74: ZTE MU500

              • @bemybubble: You might be able to run an ethernet cable from 5G device to Belong device (either WAN or LAN port I can't remember the configuration), then configure settings on both modems. However you may need to unplug the NBN line from Belong modem due to a WAN clash I think. Not sure, have a play around with it.

  • I connected my Asus RT-AC86U router WAN port to my Optus 4G Huawei B818 modem/router LAN1 port and it worked a great. I also turned off the Huawei wifi afterwards since I found the Asus RT-AC86U wifi performs much better.

It's a very similar set up to what you wanted to achieve so I don't see why you can't set up yours.

    • I know my 5G modem has an IP bypass which is to enable bridging. But the wifi remains on? I thought bridging solely restricts it to modem mode and disables wifi?

      • I had the Asus router to auto detect and setup so I suppose the Huawei modem/router wasn’t set to bridge mode. I don’t get any network errors at all with lower ping to fortnite and faster download. Everything worked better for me without bridge mode.

Have you tried connecting without bridge mode and if it gives you network errors?

        • And turn off the modem on the router? How do I do that? disable DCHP?

          • @bemybubble: After the Asus router was installed I set up its wifi and tested it to be working. I then logged into the Huawei modem/router and simply turned its wifi off. I could have left its wifi on but I didn’t want so many SSID.

I haven’t done the professional job in which I think you wanted to do but as long as it works I don’t need to set it to bridge mode. Give it a try and if it works great. If not you can keep trying.

  • Ok. So turns out I plugged my Ethernet cable from the 5G modem into my WAN port into my modem router, unplugged the phone line and voila!

Didn’t know that’s what the wan port was for 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • I'm going for the same setup as you, wish me luck!

Edit: Nice it worked 100-300 around the house now!
