Bad Hairdressing Service that refuse to refund $1,000

Hi,

My wife decided to have hair extensions put in, though within 2 weeks, 2 pieces fell out and several sores developed on her head. She wanted a refund but they refused and only offered for extensions to be redone. She had the extensions removed. Any advice on how to recover the money if any?

Appreciate any input.

She can leave bad reviews around and make a stink on social media and if she is lucky they'll offer a refund in exchange for taking down the review. I don't think there's any ombudsman she can go to for hairdressing.

    • +16

ahhh yes, blackmail them to get your way?

The company offered to correct the issue with the work paid for but the OP chose to remove them instead. The reason two of the many hair extensions fell out is unknown, these 'sores' are also a very well known issue on newly installed hair extensions. So again not the hairdressers fault.

So yeah your plan to bad mouth them to get your way, sounds childish.

      • -1

OP wants to know what they can do. This is basically all they can do. I'm not saying I advise it as a course of action.

        • +4

I'm not saying I advise it as a course of action.

But yet you posted the statement for them to bad mouth the business to get their way. So why even say this in the first place if you don't advise this course of action?

  • +9

Demanding a full refund when the only x% is affected is unreasonable.

  • +4

get another hair dresser @ $1000

several sores developed on her head.

Maybe hair extensions just aren't for her.

    Just an expensive lesson really.

  • +17

How do you know it was a result of bad hairdressing service and not some other factors? If you buy peanuts and discover you have a peanut allergy after consuming them, do you go and get refund for peanuts?

I'm not dismissing that hairdressers could have done a bad job but you are not really convincing they did.

    • I forgot to mention the extensions all developed split ends. The sores could be due to sensitivity, but extensions falling out are at the fault of the salon. This all happened within a week, it's possible more could have fallen.

Went to brothel, had infection and the area was sore the next day, brothel refused to refund 400$. Bad service by brothel.

    • Hopefully at the time, you had an enjoyable moment

At least you got a happy ending…

$1000 for hair extensions. It's free to let it grow out.

        .

      • I've still got hair but it's going white :(

  • +13

lol at paying $1000 for hair extensions

  • +2

I know nothing about hair extensions.

    But $1000 is a lot of money…

For that money, I reckon it does not qualify as an OzBargain.

    • +6

Plot twist: original price is $2000, she got a 50% off Groupon code and used shopback for cashback. Purchase didn't track, however. Now get spam calling.

    lol

Sounds like the hairdresser is being reasonable by offering to redo the work.

If a painter did a poor job painting my house, I'd be satisfied if they offered to redo it for free.

    • -2

If the paint product is peeling and the redo of work is using the same product, you wouldn't be satisfied with that work. You'd want the painter to take up issue with paint supplier assuming the work was done as per instructions.

      • +2

OP's wife hasn't taken up the (reasonable) offer for the job to be re-done. If she had, and the work was still faulty / poor quality, then she could really complain.

  • +3

Bad hair day it seams…. XD

Hair extensions are designed for cosplay and not rough play.

    "Appreciate any input."

Your wife can try NSW Fair Trading for advice .

My hairdresser had a client who had an allergic reaction to the glue when she had hair extensions done for the first time and she accepted a salon gift certificate for the same value. Would your wife consider this option?

$1000 for fake hair………..the world has gone mad.

    • +1

They usually use real human hair

    • +1

No different than paying $1000 for a mid tier graphics card…

One gives you confidence the other just makes you broke.

  • +1

Did your wife follow the care instructions given by the salon? Has she had hair extensions before and not reacted?

    • Yes she followed the care instructions, it was the first time though, also the extensions developed split ends which I forgot to mention!

  • +3

    $1000 for hair extensions????

1 action on the list is get a new wife.

    • +2

      Why?
Perhaps OP's wife is on a high income (perhaps even higher that gasp her husband!!!), and has this disposable income available.

      • +2

This is OzBargain with the emphasis on bargain. Dropping $1k on hair extensions is unusual especially when she can give it time to grow…

        • +2

I agree fully; to me, $1k on a vanity expense is ridiculous (but that is for me, in my circumstances).
My comment was directed at what appeared to be a (very large) assumption by tsunamisurfer that the husband should be mandating / controlling how much his wife is spending. Or get rid of her.

  • +2

$1k tells me you need to shop around more before doing these things.

    • +2

Pretty sure that's the going rate to get started. Real human hair is expensive.

Eyelash extensions and acrylic nail refills add up in the monthly budget too.

    • +1

      Do you mean marriage?

  • +1

Tíme to get a new wife :)

  • +2

Firstly, give your wife some mental support and love her for who she is. She is probably upset on both accounts.

Secondly, check if the shop has some sort of satisfaction guarantee. If so, them offering to redo her hair is probably reasonable outclme. If not, she is out of luck.

  • +1

What were the warranty conditions when your wife signed the contract?

  • +2

If a customer is not satisfied with their cut, colour or other hair service, you may wish to offer to redo the service at no extra cost. You may also choose to offer a refund if a customer is very dissatisfied. In any event, you must provide a refund or resupply your services in certain circumstances set out in the Australian Consumer Law.

    • She wanted a refund but they refused and only offered for extensions to be redone.

A repair was offered and rejected. Next stop NCAT.

      • +2

A repair was offered and rejected.

Depending on the issue, a refund may be requested by the customer and they do not have to accept a repair… That's written into the ACL.

Two extensions is a minor fault. What does the ACCC say about minor faults?

          • @whooah1979: "For example, these circumstances include major or minor fault. You do not, however, need to give a refund for a change of mind."
            Fantastic! Much appreciated!

            • -1

@donkeydoc: That doesn't make any sense. What is the remedy for a minor fault?

              • @whooah1979: "If a customer is not satisfied with their cut, colour or other hair service, you may wish to offer to redo the service at no extra cost. You may also choose to offer a refund if a customer is very dissatisfied. • @donkeydoc: The shop offered a repair and the customer refused.

Go to the NCAT. They deal with disputes like this.

          • +2

            @whooah1979:

Two extensions is a minor fault.

You can't just base it on the number. They may have all been done poorly and more may have fallen out soon.

            • +1

@jv: You're right. This is way the next step is the NCAT.

              • +3

@whooah1979: If you are paying $1000, it is reasonable for most people to expect they'd be done to a high standard and quality and would last for more than 2 weeks.

        • Thank you jv!

  • $1000 ? OMG!

Looks like jv has helped you with the consumer laws

Who the (profanity) drops $1K on hairdressing services?
OP, please surrender your wife's OzB membership immediately.

  • ozbargain users reaction to this thread does not disappoint

    Wow $1k for hair, crazy.

  • -2

If my wife waned to spent $1K on ****** hair extensions, I guarantee she wouldn't be my wife for much longer.

    • +1

Added a like for your post to balance it out. You're probably negged by all the wives who think spending $1k on hair extensions is ok.

If my partner makes $300k and wants to spend $1k on her hair, I'd say go for it and do whatever. But if she's a student on Centrelink and does the same thing, I'd throw the ice trout from IRC to her to reflect on.

      • +1

Thanks CH, at least some get it.

So many virgin comments here from people who were probably spending more on a 3060 a few months back. If someone wants to spend money on their appearance to make them feel better then by all means go for it.

    • @Slurped If you're in IT banking $300k a year and you want to spend on a 3060, sure. But it's another thing if you're on Centrelink with 5 starving children and spending that kind of money on fake hair. So it's all relative.
