Exhaust Washer Mod Legal Implications

Hello,

Recently I have be seeing a lot of people online doing the "Exhaust Washer Mod" to their cars in an attempt to make them sound louder or better. I was wondering, what would the legal implications be? Would they receive fines/demerit points for modifying it? Or just for the noise level the car makes if it is over the legal limit (which is most definitely would be).

Cheers!

makes if it is over the legal limit (which is most definitely would be)

    Why draw attention to yourself…

Next thread: I got fined and defected for too loud a car… how do I get out of it.

    • I haven't personally done it, but know people who have. They don't seem to care when driving, but I was curious as to know if they'd get in trouble for just a loud car or if you can get in trouble for putting the washers on in the first place

You lose low end torque if doing this mod usually, not really worth the trade off.

If you need a better sounding exhaust save for an upgrade.

I had to google it as I'd never heard of it before (and have spent a lot of time and money modding cars over the years). This seems like a completely stupid idea. You're deliberately creating an exhaust leak. It'd sound terrible IMO, may even hurt performance. Anyway, you'll most likely be picked up for noise if anything. Depending on where along the system you create the leak it could be argued you're tampering with emissions control (eg if you place them just before the cat) and in that case if you got someone who looked closely enough and knew what they were looking at the fine is five figures

    • My friend has his toward the back of the car, between only thing behind it is the muffler.

        why is it always "a friend"… ???

You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep.

      • Has your friend ever said why they want their car to sound like a clapped out camry? I just don't know why anyone would want their car to sound like that.

Sounds like your better off starting with speed holes

  • why not just take your exhaust off and suck up more of that glorious carbon monoxide. just as legal …

  • Stop sniffing exhaust fumes OP sugar in your fuel works just as well.

Installing a component to increase the noise and cause even more noise pollution in our cities, without improved performance, is one of the most stupid things a person can do. It seems like a meaningless sociopathic behaviour.

Had to look up what this is. How stupid.

  • Your "friend" is a douchebag.

  • I had a 1991 subaru Liberty where they would either replace the muffler with a milo tin or straight up drill out a section of the muffler.

Sounded sick, probably didn't do the performance much good. Oh and the police were all over it from day 1.

  • This is currently the top result when I just searched Bing to find out what an exhaust washer mod is.

Seems like a terrible idea. Just going to attract defects, while not enhancing performance at all most likely, and sounding like shit.

With exhaust fumes leaking into the cabin, you get tired, then fall asleep.
There have been people who have put a pipe from the exhaust into the cabin,
so they can fall asleep & die (suicide)
Just don't do the exhaust mod, it is illegal & deadly

  • Never heard of this. Sounded stupid. Google search showed posts from 2009 so it’s been an internet joke for quite some time!

  • It is an illegal modification, more-so on the leaking and deadly exhaust fumes than the extra noise.

This is because fumes get sucked into the vehicle thru any poor door or boot/hatch seal, or holes in the floor via corrosion or mother dumb modifications, or the possibility of this happening.

This has been a fail on a Road-worthiness check since day dot, and when you go to sleep as a driver 'and wake up dead'…you will have 2nd thoughts on doing it.

To those doing or contemplating illegal modifications, Vehicle mod' rules are there for a reason even if you do not know about them, understand them or you disagree with them. You do not have the right to put lives in danger for your ego.
