I have been looking for a full size mechanical keyboard to replace my Kogan I got a couple of months ago. The Kogan one was my first and now I am looking for something about this price range which will be a noticeable upgrade. Mainly for typing for me, so it has been suggested to me that a tactile switch board would be best, and I like the sound from the brown switches I have now. Personally will be using it on Linux but I can boot into Windows to customise with the software first. Just hoping those settings live on the board afterwards

  • Should be able to get 3% cashback with shopback?

    • Looks like 6% through both shopback and cashrewards - updated the title

      • Cashrewards says 6% on Alienware but 0% on accessories so I wonder what category this is in?

        • Yeah I dont know. I changed it to possible for now. Cashrewards site just says Alienware branded bought through Dell, doesn't mention specific categories

          • @stevem42: Did anyone else try cashrewards? I did and mine didn't track at all.

            • @videoman: Only seems to be opinion at this point, alienware is listed on both sites but my mention of cashback was deleted from the title. If i had to guess, I'm assuming it's only laptops but would be nice to get some clarification

I've got the 510k, and it's OK except that it's too sensitive… so just slightly touching a key registers a press which makes it tricky for typing. And the cable is thick, so I drilled a hole in my desk to route it under.

      Added to the op. Thanks!

  • I have the 510k (link above). Its awesome.

    • You don't find it too sensitive… ie when typing if you just slightly touch another key it registers that key.

      • Not at all. Haven't had a misclick and use it regularly for typing and excel work.

    • is the 510 better than the 410?

Do you know if the extra keys are reprogrammable?

      • The choice between 410 vs 510 really comes down to the choice between brown or low-profile red switches.

There are other differences, but the switches are so different that they're going to be the determining factor.

        • i like the white colour of the 510 but think I will prefer tactile switches

          • @lostn: If you prefer tactile switches, the low-profile reds really aren’t for you.

With keyboards, it’s typing experience first, looks second.

            • @Mrlrlpe: I'm not one to compromise on expensive things. I will wait for one that has both. Thanks.

  • are the keycaps ABS or PBT plastic? Is it available in any other colour?

  • I bought 410K in previous deal and Dell declined cashrewards (I have applied Dell advantage program discount code). I do a search and some people said if you have applied Dell discount code through Dell advantage program then you can't have the cashrewards bonus. Just information for those want to know.

    • Thanks for the info. Care to throw out a review on your thoughts on the keyboard?

I bought this keyboard on the last deal. Have had it for a few weeks now. First Mech keyboard, so I don't have too much experience, but the typing experience is more… fun than my old membrane keyboard, and I don't think it's just because of the novelty of having a mechanical keyboard, it just feels more satisfying. I am not sure whether keycaps are ABS or PBT, but I do not think they are double-shot. RGB lighting is pretty nice, bright enough and very smooth, looks to be driven at high enough PWM frequencies because they don't have any camera flicker when being recorded.

The software is a bit crap. I can't really put it any other way. For Macros, it seems fine, but I don't use this feature at all, so take my opinion on that with a pinch of salt. The typical RGB customisations are available, but really not much else. You can't do your own fully custom RGB effects like I've heard you can on Logitech, for example. There don't seem to be any third-party software available for Alienware keyboards (not even sure if it's even possible), because they don't seem too popular.

I'm really happy with it for my first mech keyboard (cannot rule out that this might be because I really don't have a point of reference). Drop any questions in the replies :)

Edit: This has a non-standard bottom row, so keep that in mind if you plan on changing keycaps down the line.

You could give this program a try if you're really interested in the RBG stuff https://www.project-aurora.com

      • Unfortunately, that program only says it supports certain alienware laptop models, but thanks for the suggestion.

    • This has a non-standard bottom row

Do you know if there is more than one size for non-standard?

Or is it just either standard/non-standard?

Not to say it's not a deal, but keyboards have gone up in price… I recall 4 years ago purchasing Cherry MX Red keyboard for $20 on sale, will that never happen again? Not full sized, no backlight.

    • That's an amazing deal. I've been buying keeping an eye on keyboard prices for over a decade, and have bought a few in that time, and it's been rare to get anything with genuine Cherry switches for under $100.

      • They weren't Cherry switches, my bad! This was the deal though: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/322449

I have keyboards with Gateron, Outemu, Kailh, unbranded and Cherry switches. All “brown”.

There are massive differences between them in terms of consistency, force, and scratchiness. I even have two keyboards supposedly with the same brown Kailh switches, and they feel nothing like each other.

The switches matter. In the end, after an endless series of cheap keyboards, I splurged on one with Cherry switches and a good build quality. Night and day difference.

  • Ordered one thanks. I hope my son will like it.

  • I was trying to find the ebay Dell store where I got my AW568 for $69 to share with everyone… But its back up to $150..
