Facebook marketplace, as there's no fees unlike ebay and you get a good indication of whether someone is genuine by how old and active their profile is. It is a lot of work to make your profile look real if you're going to scam. Gumtree can just be a throwaway phone number and email.

Edit: geez 2 negs already even though a bunch of people selected Facebook marketplace…

Lot more salty people around ozb since covid started. Dunno why though.

I’ll probably get like negged hard, but why care if people downvote your comment? It’s not like karma on Reddit

        it still hurts :'<

      • I like to think of ozbargain as a positive constructive community. Having faceless reasonless negs is the complete opposite of that.

For expensive items, I use the 2 free eBay listings per month to avoid the eBay fees and get the best price. I sometimes chuck on under $50 items on eBay and just cop the fee since it's less hassle than haggling, arranging time to meetup, etc. on gumtree

  • I sell a lot of stuff on all of these different platforms.

eBay is expensive, but if you can get the final value fee waived, then it's by far the best IMO. I consistently get higher prices on eBay auctions for "popular" items than I do on any other platform. Also something about bidding in an auction means that people are more likely to get FOMO and bid up prices more whereas the same people haggle like nuts on Scumtree and FB Marketplace.

    • Without disclosing too much maybe to affect your sales, what are some of the stuff? Is it a business or just personal stuff?

I mean around where I live, there's so much free good quality stuff it'd probably be a waste of time trying to make money, unless it's specialized.

      • Personal stuff, mostly tech related.

Sure eBay is easy to setup a listing but eBay makes it too easy for buyers to scam unfortunately

Remember with Scumtree and FB, cash only!

Gumtree and FBM are the go but it is very regional variant. For example for computer parts where I live I have much more success in Gumtree than FBM.

You do have to put an automatic mark up on everything so that every buyer can feel like they negotiate with you

Remember cash only. And be wary of run off's for portable stuff (eg iphones - see a story about that in our local Facebook group every couple of weeks)

  • I use gumtree to buy which is way better than selling most of the time, to sell mostly eBay with the free fees.

  • looks at poll

i must be missing so many deals by not using bookface 😠

    • anyway i get lots of good stuff on gumtree

I voted GT over FB coz the Former layout and interface is easier IMO

        • i do wish they had more search options
would it kill them to add some booleon?

i also wish they had an archive

  • Thanks guys seems like I need to use FB more :-)
