About Selling on OzBargain's Classified Section

This thread is for discussion about selling/swapping/buying between OzBargain members.

Update 24 July 2013

We have just rolled out a new classifieds section and to replace the selling and swapping forum. Classified posts allow for linking to multiple images and has fields about the item, price, location, payment and delivery methods etc.

Some of the differences include:

  • Linked images are displayed on the listing. Up to 10 images are allowed per listing.
  • Users can mark a listing as sold/gone/found as appropriate without editing the title.
  • Users must have private messaging enabled before posting
  • No overseas posters, 1st posters or P-platers

Note that Entertainment Book voucher swap requests should be posted in the Entertainment Book Voucher Swap forum. We may develop more features in future to make it easier to swap between members.

(Historical)

This is the Selling and Swapping forum on OzBargain, and here are some guidelines:

  • This is strictly for personal use only — trading or swapping between members. If you are a business and you have a good bargain to promote, please post them as deals.
  • Please be descriptive about the item you wish to sell, in the same way that you would have listed them on eBay. For example,
    • Price
    • Detailed description of the item, i.e. brand, model number, new/used, condition, etc.
    • Location of the item
    • Payment method
  • Feel free to use the File Uploader to upload images of your items, and then paste the link back here.
  • Once the item has been sold, please prefix your subject line with '[Sold]'
  • Please also enable your contact form (by clicking on "Edit" in your profile page) if you wish other members to communicate with you via email.

Note that OzBargain does not protect the seller nor the buyer but just acts as a market place so please beware the potential risk dealing with other members here (sorry have to make this clear).

Comments

  • Hi scotty,

    how to submit the deal?
    is it under the forum?

    thanks,
    vie

  • if i list my items on eBay, does it mean its qualify to list in this selling forum?
just want to make sure i dont breach any of ozbargain policy?

    Pearl

    • Probably not as its got no price. Can use instead of ebay, but not together

  • just want to ask, if we trade and seller is a fraud, are you able to provide ip address, location etc if the matter is reported to the police?

  • just want to know when can we submit the deal.
i just don't want to break any of ozbargain policy.

    • after 24 hours
But please do not spam Ozb, please post bargains

  • Can you sell collectable alcohol on this forum (Crown Ambassador, Bundy 101 etc) or do you need a liquor licence.

  • is it ok to put "wanted" in the selling/swapping ?

  • Um… How do I prefix the subject line with '[Sold]'? I've listed a gift voucher for sale, and someone has now purchased this. But I can't find how to edit the subject line of my original post!?

    • Hi, you can click on the 'edit' tab which is located right underneath your forum post subject in the yellow bar, and edit the subject there.

  • Hm… I must be thick - I can't see any yellow bar. There's the usual orange one right at the top with "Ozbargain, Submit, Deals, Live, etc." Then further down the page there's a "Share this discussion" box with a facebook icon… and to the right, there's the "New Forums" and "Who's online" boxes.

Unless you mean when you click "My Account" at the top - and then click on "Posts"… There is an edit button there, but that doesn't allow to edit the post either.

  • Hm… No, I don't see those. Here's a partial screen capture of what I see:

    • Sorry about that. I'll investigate more tomorrow as to why you are unable to see it. For now, I've edited your post to say [SOLD].

There's current an edit limit on the forum posts — OP can no longer edit the text after 12 days. We don't have any plan to change that as it would affect other posts as well. However in the future if you wish to have things changed after the editing has been locked, please use Report to request a change by the moderators.

  • Thanks.

  • The selling and swapping forum has been replaced by classifieds and Entertainment Book Voucher Swap forum. Please see updated description above.

I've just listed my first item and have two comments.

First is there was no way to list something with "offers" as a price. Best I could do was list no price which it thankfully let me do and mention offers in the listing. Not a big deal, but might be nice if there was a $Offers option or similar that displayed instead of the price when viewing the list.

Second thing is there's view counter - any way of showing how many times a listing has been viewed?

Thanks for the feedback. Agree that it's a good idea to be able to state something like 'best offer' against the price symbol. I'll add that to my TODO list.

As far as I know we don't keep track of node views for any nodes.

    • @foobar, the ability to specify 'offers' has been rolled out this morning. I've taken the liberty of editing your listing.

  • Suggest an 'OzBargainer since' field and maybe a number of happy dales, unhappy sales/feedback link for each user that is listing an item? To give a bit more confidence than say Gumtree, etc?

  • May I suggest that posts offering freebies be excluded from the classified posting limit as posters don't gain anything from such activities? Just imagine how frustrating it would be if someone has a few unrelated freebies to offer on the same day/week but can't post all of them because of the posting limit.

    • Yeah understand what you're saying. The current problem is the listing type (selling/buying/freebie/swapping) can be edited at anytime by the OP after the initial submission. This will mean that they could just set it to 'freebie' initially to bypass the posting limits, and edit it later.

      • Not an IT expert but would it work if freebies is moved up to the same level as classifieds instead of a subset of classifieds?

        • Personal giveaways/freebies are still a type of classifieds so the current location is correct.

I'll put some more thought into this.

    • Currently deals/forum posts/classifieds share one limit. We'll try out having classifieds limit of

      • 1 per 5 min
      • 3 per hour
      • 5 per day

      to begin with.

Hopefully this will help a little.

  • What's the rules regarding bumping classifieds posts? How long does one need to wait before a bump is ok?

  • Hi,
I would like to sell 2 gift vouchers- this is the first time using this way to sell. What is a safe way for me to accept payment? Obviously this method relies on trust? The recepient trusts that I am going to send the voucher out?

    • paypal

  • What happened to the Classified post about the discounted Netflix subscription ?

    • It did not meet classifieds requirements.

Classifieds a place for selling, giving away or swapping your excess personal items and also to indicate interest in obtaining items.

Selling large quantities is more like a business listing.

Also note that for OzBargain purposes, deals need minimal business details like an ABN.

  • I missed out because it wasn't listed on the wiki! Not my fault i found out now.

    Please update here:

If your listed item is still available after 1 month, you may repost the same item again. If the same item is posted within 1 month, even if the price has been updated, the second post will be unpublished as a duplicate.

so it matches the sidebar there.

If the same item is posted within 1 month, regardless of price or quantity, it will be unpublished as a duplicate.

    • They both mean the same thing, you can't post the same thing within a month of the original post, but I have updated the classifieds posting guidelines to specify modified quantity as well as price.

  • Too scared to ask about something I want to sell publicly, am I able to message someone? Just want to know if it's OK to sell or not. Have read the guidelines but am still not sure.

    • Please use TWAM, where you can privately ask moderators.

      • Oki thanks!

  • Hi @hamza23 how do I mark my classified ad as sold? I can see there is a button to ‘end’ Is that sold? Because when I pressed that it still says ‘selling/ended’

This is my ad that I need to say sold/ no longer available as it has sold - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/860261

    Please let me know, thanks

    • Yes 'ended' covers all scenarios, sold, expired, no longer for sale etc.

      • Great thank you @hamza23
