Washing Machine New or Used?

Is it better to buy a new or used washing machine? What brands are the best value? Is the Kogan washing machine worthwhile?

Unless you prefer your clothes toasted don't get Kogan.

New is usually best and comes with a warranty, however used or reconditioned is cheaper.

Personally I wouldn't touch anything from Kogan with their reputation for lack of after sales service, especially electrical.

    • i can't comment on washing machines but have been happy with a few electrical items from kogan

I had their first and second gen TV's when they first came out which at the time..was good value for money. first one carked it 2 years back but the 2nd gen is still going strong from daily use (non smart , LED TV's)

I have purchased several smaller electrical goods from them (car bluetooth transmitter , car electrical accessories) and so far i have not been dissapointed

To be fair i see Kogan as a wholesaler that generally tries to give competitive prices given it is an online economy these days with regards to purchasing especially electrical goods and accessories. i would say there should not be a big "expectation" on after-sales service and people should do more research with regard to the product they are buying , most new electrical goods come with decent warranty length which gives a rough indicator to how long the product is expected to last in general.

To OP , i would buy new and not used. most people are not bothered to clean out the lint and could be a possible fire hazard if you don't do it yourself pairing the fact ..well i don't know about you but i would not feel overly comfortable buying a used washing machine for obvious reasons

  • Any recommendations for new? Is there anything decent for under $500?

  • Also is it better to get a front loader or top loader?

  • The NEW one, recommend Simpson.

  • Don't buy Kogan, you will regret it
    Used is fine

  • New.

They take an absolute flogging in some houses (like mine) and they are very expensive to repair.
Stuff like drum bearings will fail over time and they are such a big job to replace that it's not really economically viable.

Unless you can find something pretty new (1 or 2 years old)

Put it this way, you have to assume that if you buy a second hand machine it could die the first time you get it home. So you’re really taking a punt on it. For some people that’s cool, because either they can easily repair it themselves, or they have the money. But, on the whole they can be a pain in the arse to fix, and or be expensive to fix. I wouldn’t advise someone to buy a second hand washing machine.

  • used one from gumtree/FB marketplace, usually around ~$150 to 200 delivered

  • Used
They are built more solid, and they don't suffer with the low water issue like the newer models

  • Used is fine. Might need a thoroughly cleaning first, mine was spitting out filthy looking water even when I didn't put anything in to wash…
