Dunno why this is labelled for SSDs, as it'll take any SATA drive

    • +4

      Any 2.5" SATA drive

      • +3

The product images even show a mechanical drive, haha.

    • +8

      Super Sexy Drive

  • +3

I use plenty of these for portable SSDs and they're excellent.

  • +2

Awesome , thanks for the post! was looking to get one :)

  • Thanks bought one, I have the black one for a few years and getting very sticky on the plastic case, hope the transparent one is better.

    • +1

Give it a wipedown and save yourslef $10!

      • Tried the sticky like the plastic melted. I think was caused by the bad plastic material.

    • Yeah I've got a couple of the black ones with the same problem & they're not nice to handle

      • This is China "new" technology to make it feels as "silky" surface, lot of tools and other Chinese made plastic used it, then make feels as sticky shit. I remove it quite easily by mixed isopropyl and water by 80% x 20%.

  • seems they do 9.95 every couple of months and the price has gone down to $4-6ish shipped based on ozbargin history.

    • Yes, it varies and there is chipset lottery with these. If this is indeed JMS578 as quoted, then it is worth considering. However, if these ended up being a different chipset, would people actually returning them?

      • Why would it matter? Is there a difference in transfer speeds or something?

        • It depends on whether you intend to put an SSD in it or HDD. If SSD, you want a chipset that supports TRIM over USB (as TRIM is important later on once you use the SSD over a period of time). UASP could provide faster performance, but then again, if you just put HDD in, the it might not matter.

I have quite a few Orico cheap enclosures with different chipsets…. They don't perform the same. Some, I simply wouldn't use SSD with them.

          • @netsurfer: Oh interesting… I guess you shouldn't expect much from such a cheap SSD Enclosure then wow :)

            • @Zackeroo: I can confirm JMS578 supports UASP (though I don't find its performance that good, I tried both AMD and Intel). TRIM over USB, you need to test it. I am just not very certain you will get that chipset. $10 - I doubt people would return it if you get one with a different chipset.

The only thing I don't like is that the cheap supplied USB cables aren't speed compatible with the PS5 for backups/running games directly (I've tried 3 cables that work perfectly on PC) - PS5 simply refuses unless you use a quality superspeed cable which are more expensive

  • Novice here. Would this work for a Samsung SSD drive I bought but never used for my old desktop?

    • +1

      Yep

  • +1

    Thanks Turd.

  • Another novice question, if I buy Samsung SSD drive and put it into this case, other than the overall pricing, how can it be differ to the SSD external drive (for example Samsung T5) ?

Will that effect the speed and reliability when we compare to external SSD drive?

    Thanks

    • +1

No difference. It's capped at USB3 or SATA3 speeds, which is realistically 500MB/s for large files like ISOs and video files. For smaller files like a photo dump, it'll be much slower.

      • +1

That's incorrect as USB 3.0 bandwidth is below SATA3, whereas Samsung T5 uses USB 3.1 gen 2 which has more bandwidth than USB 3.0 (and SATA3).

        • Not if your pc/laptop has USB 3.0 ports. That’s where the speed will be capped at regardless of T5 USB 3.1 gen2, which I have not seen on any computer yet.

          • +1

@MuddyClear: Macs? All my desktop PCs have them. My NUC and Macs all have Thunderbolt 3 ports. Even in USB 3 mode, the USB 3.1 gen 2 chipsets do support UASP and TRIM over USB, whereas USB 3.0 chipsets… most don't (and some needs firmware upgrade).

            • +1

@netsurfer: Exactly, and I'm pretty sure Thunderbolt 3 allows for connections speeds of up to 40Gbps

My 5-year-old Thinkpad has dual Thunderbolt 3 ports lol

          • @MuddyClear: My PC has 4x 5Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 8x 10Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports on the rear I/O panel. They exist.

        • +1

          540 MB/s
Fast Transfer Speeds. With Samsung V-NAND flash memory and a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface, the T5 provides transfer speeds of up to 540 MB/s*, that's up to 4.9x faster than external HDDs**. Transfers and backups of large-sized data including 4K videos and high-resolution photos will be much quicker and faster.

          From Samsung's own website.

      • Thank you everyone for sharing. Much appreciated. have a good weekend :)

    • +2

There ARE differences. Despite T5 being SATA3 based, the chipset used is USB 3.1 gen 2. While USB 3.1 gen 2 is capable of more than SATA3 (and generally it is better to put NVMe SSD in it, when using a SATA3 based drive, it will still perform better than USB 3.1 gen 1 / USB 3.0.

Furthermore, pretty much all USB 3.1 gen 2 chipset would support TRIM over USB and UASP. Also, you get both USB-C/USB-C and USB-C/USB-A cables with T5. With all that said, if you do get JMS578 chipset with this enclosure, JMS578 is a decent USB 3.0/3.1 gen 1 chipset.

      • +2

        To the laymen no difference

        • +2

There is also difference in cable quality. I've had a couple of Orico enclosures which the included cable would occasionally play up (the subpar chipset in them adds insult to injury). You do get better cables with branded external HDDs/SSDs. Even some of the slightly cheaper ones sold by retail stores have decent cables.

Those 2 enclosures should really go to the bin…

      • +1

What the hell you trying to say…he just wants to know if the t5 is going to be faster or this with the enclosure with similar ssd in it.

        • +1

T5 is faster (if your PC has USB 3.1 gen 2 or 3.2 gen 2 ports or Thunderbolt 3 ports) because it is USB 3.1 gen 2 based. Though Samsung was a bit dodgy and should have put an NVMe SSD with the chipset (i.e. T7 is done the right way).

But, if you use T5 on a USB 3.0/3.1 gen 1 port, then the difference is minor (mainly because I am not that impressed with JMS578 chipset).

The USB 3/3.1/3.2 gen 1/2 naming is a mess. Regardless, ideally, we would prefer USB 3.1 gen 2 enclosure chipset to come down in price, because all USB 3.1 gen 2 chipsets have proper UASP and USB over TRIM. USB 3.0 chipsets, there is lottery. I have quite a few Orico enclosures… 3 different chipsets so far… some with dodgy cables. Are you going to verify you do get JM578 (and that UASP works and TRIM works - if you use SSD)? Some of the junk Orico ones, I had to use them with HDDs.

      • Thank you everyone for sharing. Much appreciated. have a good weekend :)

  • Still have a few of these sealed when they were two for $12.00 (buy one get one free) in 2019! Decent cases and have a lot. All trouble free to date,

    • Might be better getting usb ssd drive bay for connecting multiple ssds

      • I have drive bays but rarely use other than for syncing two drives. These enclosures are great for sticking old or new drives into as external drives.

  • Wow, right after I order some nasty cheapo for $7.50 from aliexpress. Thanks life!

  • +1

Thanks, the transparency helps identify which drives are inside.

  • +4

For those who care about using a SATA III SSD with 2.5' enclosure, this particular one (or any Orico, black or transparent, that has a Micro-B on the closure end, either using JMS576 or JMS578) does NOT support TRIM (tested on Arch Linux and Manjaro), it does support UASP though.

    TL;DR
The enclosures known to work (validated on Linux OS) with TRIM (discard) and UASP.

USB to SATA: VL716 (Jeyi iEagle 7)
USB to PCIe (for M.2 NVMe SSDs): JMS583 (Orico PVM2-C3), RTL9210 (Jeyi i9 GTR series)

cheers OP, cheap enough & looks like decent quality
My old Volans enclosure and drive have been at a mate's for about a year.
Need to clean up and get rid of some old small GB hard drives.
Still got some 3.5" external caddys with drives too the powered ones are a bit of a hassle. too much redundant odds and ends (who knows what to do with 320 and 500GB hdds).

    • who knows what to do with 320 and 500GB hdds?

      RAID 0 game drive mate.

      • +1

Will have a look, still want a Nas one day. I've got a separate 1TB P1 M.2 ssd for games, don't really even get/make much time for that.

  • +1

grabbed one, they're a bit sneaky though… looks like they try and add a cover or something for $9.95 and then after checkout the insurance option is ticked for $2.99…

  • Can I use this on my old, old SATA desktop HDD? It’s a Western Digital Caviar SE 1600. Thanks

    • No this is 2.5" form factor, yours is 3.5"

      • Thanks. Will it still not work if I unscrew the actual enclosure and plug in the connector only to my HDD? Or will it just not go in at all?

        • I don't think you can fit it in to the SATA

          • @superforever: You could attach it BUT no way to Power them as 3.5" drives require external power.
2.5 drives run from USB power unless very old 2.5 drives which required 2 USB cables to run them (x1 extra to give the extra power required). Actually they would have been IDE and not Sata.

            • @Borg:

              You could attach

By the look at the picture I don't think you can take out the SATA connector.

Also as you said need external power.

  • You can take it out without issue, It has two screws to left and right of of the board (have one in my hand). Only noting as a FYI as I have taken one out as a "Very" portable method of connecting to 2.5" drives which I am quickly Auditing/Formating many 2.5" spare drives at a time. Its quicker than having to insert/remove them from the case :-)

  • Anybody receive it yet?

    • Nar.. probably didn't even need it, like most things

    • Has yours been delivered yet?

      • +1

Just received in mailbox, delivered together with other letters.

      • Havent yet… hmmm

        • never mind got it

    • Ordered 12/3, still not shipped yet

      • +1

Ordered and shipped 12th apparently, didn't see it last time I checked the letter box but will check today

        • Edit: it was in the mailbox. Any recommended cheap drive with similar perform to a Samsung T5? Otherwise may bang in an old SSD I have.

          • @G-rig: Cheap and Samsung T5 don't go hand in hand as theirs would be a decent drive.

Any ole SSD should do as it is just connecting to USB3, that will be the bottle neck rather than SSD used I would think.

            • @Borg: Grabbed the os drive out of my old rig, 120GB Samsung 840 ..
Should do the trick and looks sexy

          • @G-rig: Tried put in my spare Samsung EVO 500GB , copy at 340MB/s

        • must have taken a lot of orders, still nothing my end, oh well it'll turn on eventually!

          • @KRiSX: Same here

            • @adr8: must have got ozbargained as they say

              • @G-rig: I raised a ticket with them 23/3, got same day reply that said they were out of stock and were expecting stock in 10 days. Assuming they meant business days, they should be restock just about now and sending them.
