Would a Car Drive Normally with Different Size Tyres to The One Advised?

Hi,

I got a Ford Escape with 215/70 R16 tyres and a Nissan Maxima with 225/55 R17 tyres. I'm scrapping my Maxima.
The Maxima tyres are quite new and was wondering would I be able to put those on the Escape?

Thanks

Maxima tyres won't fit on Escape rims - different diameter R16 vs. R17

Maxima wheels probably won't fit on Escape - different PCD and offset?

Different sized tyres to those on the cars tyre placard can affect your speedometer accuracy and your insurance in the event if an accident.

Depending on the State your tyres generally need to be within a 15mm rolling diameter delta to the manufacturers placard.

    tl;dr

    NO

No it's a bad idea. Even if you bought new wheels to make them fit they are 28mm difference in diameter and the gearing of the vehicle will be wrong.

It’ll still work, the diameter difference is only 4%. Bigger tyres will make the vehicle slower to accelerate change the speedo (you’ll be going faster on the same position on the dial) and affect the distance registered on the odometer.

Bigger wheels may rub on under body parts in some instances.

I just put bigger wheels on my ute. It’s slower, harder to brake but only a little. My speedo went from reading 10% low to bang on. Ie 60 on the dial is now 60km/h but it used to be about 55km/h. I haven’t calculated fuel economy yet, but know it’s going to be out of whack due to changes distance travelled va what’s registered.

4wds put bigger wheels on all the time to get better ground clearance.

        • The 17s are smaller diameter tyres. He will be driving slower than what the Speedo says.

Also your speedo is calibrated on the standard wheel diameter, so you could be speeding and not know it.

Do the rims have the same bolt pattern? They might be an easy swap. Need to know year models to check it.

Does the escape come with a 17” factory wheel option? You may be able to pick up some second hand to put the bigger tyres on as a cheaper option if the maxim wheels don’t fit the escape.

Check your local state rules but you may be able to fit tyres up to 7% bigger in diameter without any legal problems.

  • You can do it, I've done it. As mentioned above there will be some differences in how the car drives but it won't be that noticeable. Make sure that the stud pattern on the Maxima rims fits the escape, then when the new tires are on make sure they don't scrub against the wheel well or body, especially when turning.

    • Scary advise …….

    • Don't, just don't.

There's a BIG difference between swappng the tyres and swapping the wheels - assuming the bolt pattern fits.

The OP was asking about using tyres R17 on R16 wheels. NO YOU CAN'T DO IT!! Different rim sizes. They WILL NOT FIT.

  • OP has enough information, thread closed.
