Buying a Vehicle Interstate (NSW)

Hi All,

Was looking at buying a motorcycle interstate (primary reason being there being very limited 2nd hand options for the bike I want in NSW). The bike is in Victoria, which I was planning to visit in early April. There is a chance the bike will be sold before then, so fingers crossed I have some luck.

Just wanted to know if anyone has any advice. I know i would need:
- Green slip (~600 according to online quote)
- Blue slip (~40)
- Payment for registration fee (not sure on cost), stamp duty (~480) and plates (not sure on cost).

Bike cost is around $16,000 (1000cc). I've listed some prices above based on some research ive done. Am i correct in saying, if I bought a motorcycle in NSW, i would only be paying stamp duty (assuming the bike was registered).

Am i effectively forking out 1k just from buying a bike interstate?

Appreciate any help, cheers.

Let me guess Z1000 or Z900 and you ride with shorts and a t-shirt.

You'll need insurance for the drive home

Possibly a tempory registration slip to ride home if owner cancels rego

    • Definitely plan to have insurance for the ride home (still yet to decide if transport is worth it).

Would you know if the RWC in victoria is seperate from rego? If the bike is registered until July, does that mean it has a road worthy certificate until July also?

Interstate bikes are basically treated as unregistered. You are comparing an apple to not an apple.

If the bike you bought in NSW that has no registration, then you would be up for the same costs.

If you buy a registered bike in NSW, it could have anywhere between 1 day and 1 years worth of rego and would only save you the plate cost. When rego is due, it's still going to cost you rego, CTP and maybe a pink slip (depending on age) and initial transfer is still going to have to be paid when you put it in your name…

So, basically, it all depends on how you buy the bike in NSW and what it comes with… but you are looking to only realistically save on the plate fee ($47 (yellow plate) to $120 (black on white) roughly)

So, again, how long is a piece of string?

The advantage of buying a registered vehicle from another state is that you’ll have time to transfer to new owner and may not need to worry about an unregistered permit to drive it.

I bought a caravan from interstate. Was a Le to drag it home registered, then sort out the rego once home. No permit needed.
