  • It's the only toothpaste I use, not worth full price but good value when it's under half

Using products containing hydrogen peroxide daily causes enamel loss.

      https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal…

      • There is good evidence for the safety of hydrogen peroxide when used at low concentrations on a daily basis over extended periods of time, in self-administered oral health care products such as dentifrices and mouthrinses. These low concentrations neither damage oral hard or soft tissues, nor do they pose a significant risk of adverse long-term effects.

        https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11225528/

        • That article's 20 years old. I'm not sure how you think it refutes a recent study that actually tested these products.

      • +1

I'm not sure how that study applies. It's talking about using a whitening gel containing 10% Carbamide Peroxide. The toothpaste I'm talking about here has 1% Hydrogen Peroxide (the 140g for $4.00). The teeth aren't exposed to the product as long with 2 min brushing as opposed to the 4 hour gel application used in that study. Not to mention CP remains active for up to 6 hours after where HP does not.

        • Carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide. 10% CP = 3% HP, which some of these toothpastes contain.

@[Deactivated]: Thanks, but again, what about the exposure time? 2mins vs 2-4 hours?

Is this article too dated as well?

In an in vitro study performed in our lab we tested five different bleaching products for erosion of human enamel. The five products included strips at 6.5 % hydrogen peroxide, and gels at 10 % and 22 % carbamide peroxide, 35 % hydrogen peroxide, and a sodium hypochlorite containing gel system. We followed the manufacturer’s instructions and measured the loss of enamel surface by polarized light microscopy. We found that although some surfaces were softened, no enamel erosion was found.

            • @whitelie: The study you're referencing examined a short-term treatment - not daily use, which is my point.

I posted a study that observed these products damaging enamel when used daily to try to help others. Believe what you want - it doesn't bother me.

      • Don't have time to read the whole article but its

this study showed that prolonged home bleaching could cause changes in the ultrastructure, chemical composition and microhardness of the enamel

10% PC bleaching gel, when used in a way that exceeds the time recommended by the manufacturer, was able to reduce the microhardness, modify the ultrastructure and promote variations in the chemical composition of the enamel

Which doesn't mean "Using products containing hydrogen peroxide daily causes enamel loss"

  • Thanks, $3.60 using S&S is a very good price. Best at Chemist Warehouse that I've seen is $4.49 with the 10% off promo on a sale price.
