Buy 3 Inks Get The 4th Free - 30ml Inks from $12.95 + Shipping (Free on Orders over $30) @ Van Diemans's Inks

60

Here's one for the stationery nerds and a good chance to support a local Aussie business. Considering you'll be paying for 3x inks anyway shipping should be free, if you spend over $100 you'll get free express shipping, and free international shipping on orders over $200.

I've bought a couple of their inks (Hanging Lake and Pepperberry) and been pretty happy with them so far. They flow really nicely and the colour is fairly intense. I'm starting to notice a tiny bit of feathering & bleed-through on some papers but that could also be the fact the pen I have inked up right now is a broad nib that lays down a fat, wet line. I haven't tested with a thinner nib yet.

How do these compare to Noodler's?

Love those inks because they dry pretty quick and are waterproof

How do these compare to Noodler's?

      Not as good as Indomie

    • They won't be waterproof like Noodler's, who use a proprietary ingredient in their Bulletproof line of inks that make them permanent once applied to paper. Van Dieman's is much the same as other fountain pen inks in this regard, likely to run if it gets wet afterwards.

Drying time is pretty good, and the range & intensity of colours is excellent. If you trawl the blog posts on the Van Dieman's site there's some artwork they often display to showcase the ink performance.

  • 30ml Inks from $12.95

    Only $432 / ltr !!!

    • Clearly, you don't know ink. That's cheap by comparison…try looking up Pilot Iroshizuku, J. Herbin, or Caran d'Ache inks.

I only pay around $200 / ltr for genuine Epson…

You shouldn't use that in your fancy (or not fancy, if that's the case) fountain pen. It would destroy the feed and, depending on what it's made of, may damage the nib. But, you do you.

You should only use fountain pen safe ink, preferably water-based, and always flush with water between colour changes (different colours can have opposite pH levels, and that spells danger for a pen if you mix them).

@Chazzozz: It's just jv being his usual obtuse self.

            • @jackspratt: Actually, I'm happy to answer. With someone asking stupid questions and illustrating how not to use a fountain pen it gives me the opportunity to provide the right information to the people who really need it (and care about it).

  • Van Dieman's inks are great. I use their shimmers with a dip pen; normal inks in fountains. Good value.

  • but they're not archival

don't you care if the things you draw or write last?

Most of what I write is ephemeral, and I am not an artist. I do have permanent inks to use for things that I want to last a long time. If you want a good quality archival quality ink then you would be hard-pressed to go past Sailor Nano-Particle ink. It's expensive, but it's amazing how well it works.

I have Noodlers for that :) Heart of Darkness is pretty black :-)
Digital imaging preserves the rest, or the age and fade becomes part of the work.
