New Hyundai Tuscon, Suggestions for Seat Covers, Floor Mats and Other Accessories?

Hi all,

Mum got a new MY21 Hyundai Tuscon, though she didn't get any extras (probably should have gotten them to throw some in :/.. oh well). I'm planning on buying some for her and was hoping to get some suggestion on what/where to buy, or if others have purchased for this car (or other car) ?

  1. Seat covers (inc. steering wheel) I was looking to get sheepskin, but, a sticker states seats have side airbags and shouldn't use car seats :/… can you get car seats that take into account the side airbags? If so, any suggestions there ?

  2. Floor mats - Molded kind that not only covers the floor, but covers the sides of the foot area. I saw some rubber ones online, which vary in price, though anyone have other suggestions?

  3. Stone guard/protector - one of those plastic protectors that clip onto the front of the bonnet. I saw some smokey coloured ones that seemed ok. Has anyone used a different style? I did think maybe a clear-bra, though not sure how they compare to the plastic protector, or pricing.

  4. Hail/sun cover - ?

I've seem some things while web-searching, but was came here to see if others have purchased any of the above, and have good/bad experiences with a particular product or business ?

  • Do people still put seat covers in their cars?

Unless it is custom made, universal fit seat covers could even be a safety risk as they would prevent the air bags from deploying.
If you have pets perhaps get a seat protector like this one for the back seat.

    • Mum does, has for 20yrs+. She finds it adds comfort, though as you mentioned, side airbags could be an issue. I have seen a couple of seat covers that advertise "side air bag safe", but will have to contact the manufacturer to find out how exactly they work, and whether any safety authority have approved it (if that's a thing).

Airbag compliant seat covers just have low strength stitching in the airbag bit. It’s designed to come apart if the airbag needs to escape.

  • Seat covers are rubbish, and steering wheel covers should be illegal.

    • why are seat cover rubbish? also without steering wheel cover, what do people do to prevent really hot steering wheel on those hot summer days?

      • Because they slip. Not sure, I have a black car, with a black leather steering wheel, and I seem to manage in Queensland.

        • Slip? Really?What a load of BS.

          • @Hackney: I've driven more cars than you've had hot dinners mate. Most of those crappy steering wheel covers people put on don't fit, and slip on the wheel.

            • @brendanm: I very much doubt that.have owned close to 70 vehicles.Never ever had a problem with a steering wheel cover that is fitted properly, ever.Depends what you purchase, there is without a doubt, some garbage out there. So,please do not try & brag,it just does not wash. One of my current vehicles(GT) has one on,is leather, just does not move @ all. So,you are talking rubbish, period.

              • @Hackney:

I very much doubt that.have owned close to 70 vehicles

I was a car mechanic for many years. Trust me, I've driven more cars than you, not trying to brag, it's a simple fact. Dealt with lots of rubbish steering wheel covers.

                wash.One of my current vehicles(GT) has one on,is leather,just does not move @ all.So,you are talking rubbish,period.

Why put (gt)? Gt what? Why put a steering wheel cover on that is leather? Pointless.

                • @brendanm: Have been driving since 1969.You really have no idea. For a new vehicle,it also keeps the wheel from wearing,it is thicker & more comfortable to drive with a properly fitting & correctly installed one.It may not be your preference, but would not this world be boring if we all thought like you? Many, many years ago you could actually purchase stitch up ones, now they are quite difficult to source. You do what you have to do,I will do what I want to do.Think this conversation has gone as far as it can.

                  • @Hackney: Keeps it from wearing? Do you put plastic covers on your couch as well?

                    Have been driving since 1969.

Got my first real six string that summer.

              • @Hackney:

                One of my current vehicles(GT)

As a car enthusiast I have no idea what this means?

                86 GT?
                Mustang GT?
                Carrera GT?

                OK boomer.

                • @MS Paint: Mustang.OK ‘boomer’

                • @MS Paint: Won’t answer what it is. Just flexing in that weird way vying for attention. Literally just want everyone to know has a ‘fancy’ car but at the same time you have to ask questions to find out more.

                  • @Euphemistic: Hackney answered. Same car as slavoz but with a very distinguished unique feature - a leather steering wheel cover. Probably not even real leather. Who cares though?

      • Haven’t had difficulty with a hot steering wheel since I left the roof off a soft top and it was a plastic wheel in the full sun.

    • Not really rubbish. Seat covers (particularly wool) adds comfort. The car she got has fabric seats which tend to be firmer. I'll have to ask her how she feels about them but I know she prefers wool covers (has used them for 20+ years).

Steering wheel covers, understandably if they don't fit correctly, but the ones she's used have always fit perfectly fine and never slipped (except the one she has now which have started to slip after several years of use). However, they help a great deal with hot days and not burning hands.

  • My 89yr old FIL, got one two months ago….yes, he’s still motoring. Put side steps on it, went from meh to yeah baby! Also helps with getting in and out, but seriously, they change the blah look of it.

I’d just get floor mats from FitMyCar and be done with it

    • Good mob to deal with.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check them out :).

Don’t forget the carpet on the dash ;)

    • Which is actually a good thing that helps to reduce glare….IMO

Club lock for steering wheel too 😉

      • Haven't used one for a while, but I guess it couldn't hurt. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll ask and see what she says. :)

    • Thanks for the tip, I'll ask mum, see if she wants one. :)

Floor mats I would agree with.

The other items, I think your mom should enjoy the original factory trims. Otherwise she is just keeping them in pristine for the next owner…

    • No new owner, she's planning to keep for long term. Doesn't hurt to maintain it's condition (inside and out), keep things looking in good condition :). Factory seats, being fabric, are usually a bit firmer. She usually prefers wool covers as they're softer and a bit more comfortable.

You can get seat covers suitable for airbags, but unless your mum regularly eats in the car or gets involved in tough mudder events don’t bother. Fabrics are good enough to withstand normal use.

Bonnet protectors are only useful if you drive gravel. Otherwise they just catch leaves. Have removed them from my last couple of cars.

    Floor mats are good.

    Hail/sun cover? Install a carport.

    • Thanks for the feedback :)

No muddy events, though she does eat. Primarily the car seats (wool) would be more for comfort rather than durability. Though the factory seats are good, she finds them a little too firm.

Understandably about bonnet protectors, especially the plastic kind. I saw some that are like a leather/vinyl strap that slips over the front and are more in contact with the bonnet rather than being raised for leaves. Thoughts ?

Re: sun cover, we're looking at getting one of those portable car ports to help. At this stage, building one is a bit costly, but maybe down the track.

      Thanks again :)

You probably don’t need a bonnet protector. Anything you put on there is going to promote rust, wear the paint or look terrible after a short while.

As for sun cover, basically don’t bother unless you build a permanent structure. More trouble than they are worth.

Please don't put on a steering wheel cover.

    • +1

why? if you can get one that is custom made for your car they're mint, increases the girth of the steering wheel and just looks better especially on older cars.

      • -1

        especially on older cars.

Exactly. A 2021 Tucson is not one of these.

dont forget the doily's on the head rest, fluffy dice from the mirrors, and the frangipani stickers on the rear glass,,,

after you are finished, 1980 called and want their car back.
