  • Tempting - probably overkill for to upgrade to this just to use it in my study.

    • Depends on what you have in your study? 120" screen, projector, gaming consoles, subwoofer, surround speakers

Purchased recently from Harvey Norman for $630

    • damn - if you can get it cheaper at Harvey Norman then defs not a deal

You might want to qualify how? It's priced at $895 at HN, I would assume you would have purchased a new TV etc and they packaged it.

A Google search indicates that $795 is quite a common price across many retailers … so, $777 is no bargain but at least a small saving, and a bit more so given free freight for Prime members.

  • Wish this one had front outs like the 7.2. Would be perfect

  • Looks visually really nice.

Pity, no Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision or HDMI 2.1 support though.

    • It will support 8k@60hz and 4k@120hz? Is that not HDMI 2.1, or am I misunderstanding something here?

      edit; https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=…

It does support those things? With the Firmware update

      • Your right it does say it supports those via a software update. Also looks like the update will bring dolby vision too.

But it's missing Atmos and DTS-X support which is probably the reason it isn't listed as HDMI 2.1.

        • I imagine that's the point of the 7.2 model? This is the cheaper model for just basic 5.1. It's still HDMI 2.1, just less speaker output.

@ONEMariachi: Yep, Atmos/DTS-X are about those additional channels at the end of 5.1.2 (or 7.1.2 or 7.1.4 or whatever setup your amp supports). If you don't have 7+ channels of amplification, there's really no point. Including it likely adds licensing cost leading to higher priced amplifiers for no benefit.

Atmos soundtracks will display as True-HD with no quality downgrade so you're safe with the Yamaha if you're sticking to 5.1

      HDMI 2.0 for one….

Not that I'd be buying first gen 2.1 stuff, I'd strongly avoid every receiver ATM

    • Depends on your goal. If you just want 7.2 sure. However it is HDMI 2.0. Wont go above 60hz at 4k and wont support 8k.

There is also a difference in DAC quality.

The Pioneer is using a AKM AK4458 DAC while the Yamaha has a TI PCM5101A DAC. Pioneer use the TI dac in their higher end receivers.
