Best Family Vacuum Cleaner

Hi all

We currently have the dyson big ball which is rubbish and seems to just flick things backwards instead of sucj them up

A robot one would be cool but having a toddler I'm not confident it wouldn't get broken. Our child also has eczema and is getting investigated for asthma so I think having a hepa filter and a really high quality one that gets all the dust up etc are non negotiable. I'd rather pay more for a good one if it was worth it than cheap out on something crap that isn't going to do the job properly or quickly each week.

Open to a stick one I guess, or the traditional hose types. A mix of floorboards, tiles and carpet.

If anyone has any suggestions for what is a good vacuum they can recommend we'd be most appreciative.

Thanks

Depends how dirty your family is…

Was using Miele vacuum, then move to Dyson stick vac 5 years ago, haven't turn on Miele since then.

    • do you have carpet or floorboards?

      • I got carpet and tiles, its comes with power head that suite for each. But I don't have any pets.
Don't get me wrong. Miele is a great powerful vac, but Dyson stick is very convenient , specially when you got a toddler and it do its job.

  • Watch the HEPA filters as some are allot better than others. Have a read up on the google results for "vacuum for asthma sufferers" in Australia to see what people think.

Miele Vacuum C3, much better suction than the similarly priced Dyson vacuums

      This!
Avoid Dyson.. they are rubbish imho
We have had 3 in past few years and compared to Miele they are not worth the extra $$$

yeah Miele is WAY better than our Dyson. People complain about the bags and all that, it takes like 10secs to replace a Miele bag, and they last (in my experience), 2-3 months (and I have carpetted and timber flooring)

Agree. Miele is also made in Germany and will last a lot longer than any Dyson (especially compared to those with rechargeable batteries).

      • it's not the bags that are the issue, it's the weight and having to plug it in each room.

      • Never used a bag type vacuum cleaner before. Do they lose suction when the bag is filling up? Is it easy to check the level in the bag? Thanks

  • Dyson!

  • We have both Miele (going on almost 10 years) and Robot vacuum (last few months).
Very happy with both, the robot vacuum is great and you can run it when the toddler is at daycare or when you go for a walk as you can just leave it to run.
I can't comment on the hepa filter on our robot vacuum but what I can tell you is its great for hard to reach places like under table or main bed where you would struggle to reach with stick vacuum.

  • Have horrible asthma and after trying quite a few vacuums including Dyson we decided to get a Shark. Its been absolutely amazing! It fills up with dust and cat dander multiple times a week just doing the living room! Picks up the smallest of things and also larger pieces. We have a toddler too so it gets good use cleaning up after her almost everyday. I sometimes can't believe it took us so long to get one. Would highly recommend.

    • which Shark do you have?
Have had 2 Dysons and never again unless 20% of there RRP

Shark Rocket Duoclean corded. It's an amazing work horse.
I use it 3 times a week for deep vacuuming. Also have an LG stick vacuum that I use 7 days a week for quick job around the house.
        Cheers.

        • thanks. ill have a look

  • I and my daughter have asthma and allergies. I bought a Miele Complete C3 and the HEPA filter for it. It's a really good vacuum and highly recommend it. Plus it doesn't have the Dyson tax.

Nothing wrong with having a robot vacuum with a toddler. Just run it when they are asleep or at daycare. Doesn't matter if you are also not at home as you can schedule it or tell it to start from an app. Best way to keep the dust away for asthma is vacuuming very frequently and no matter how good your vacuum is, if you have to do it yourself you won't do it that often. Robot vacuums are the way to go, you can vacuum every day with very little effort on your part (just keeping junk off the floor)

I would suggest you get a robot cleaner on top of the replacement vacuum cleaner. We used to vacuum every 2 days due to the amount of dust in our house, not sure where they come from. Now we do it every 2 weeks or so, because the robot cleaner runs once a day.

  • We had a Miele C3 Cat & Dog. Incredible suction, it would actually lift the carpet off the floor. But the bags were full after every single time we vacuumed (and cost like $5 each), the turbohead was impossible to clean without cutting all the hair off since you can't remove the rotating head, and the blockage indicator was turning on constantly so we kept replacing filters to try to get it work properly. We took it back for a refund.

We then got a Dyson Big Ball Animal ex-display from JB Hifi, and it's much better. Stainless steel filters means no need to replace it, no bags, the turbohead design (somehow) never gets jammed with hair and even when it does you can simply remove it and clean, and the suction is pretty good but not as good as the Miele.

We have rental place with carpet, a wife who sheds hair constantly, and with toddler, so we give the place a massive vacuum every weekend.

    • the turbohead design (somehow) never gets jammed with hair and even when it does you can simply remove it and clean

Be careful, we melted ours a little bit because it doesn't get jammed. some of the hair had got caught in the end and the increased friction (over I can only assume many months) cooked the hair, and the plastic a bit. No issue with function, but I think I got suckered into cleaning it less because it never jammed.

The carbon fiber bristles on the turbo head have worn through though, which is a more of an annoyance, so may need to get it replaced soon anyway.

  • brilliant, thanks everyone

We currently have the dyson big ball which is rubbish and seems to just flick things backwards instead of sucj them up

We've had a dyson big ball for a few years (bought the ultimate, but I'm fairly sure its just the attachments that are different). If you're matching the right head to the right surface it shouldnt be flicking stuff around. How long have you had it? sounds like some kind of loss of suction, but I haven't had the issue so can't say for sure. There are a couple places along the unit which if blocked make the vacuum reduce suction (like at the side of the power head there is a little filtered air intake). May be worth getting it serviced (if you've had it for a while) and mention the issue, or just call up Dyson and see if they can be any help.

Good luck getting something sorted out.

Another vote for Miele Cat and Dog C3 - had it for a couple of years - works great.

  • Another Miele cat and dog 3 family here. We also have a $100 target stick vac that gets used every other day.
    Miele once a week.

  • if your dyson flicks things back instead of sucking them up then it may be wired incorrectly and the motor is spinning in reverse….. either return it or get it checked over by a sparky

  • I have the Miele CX1 Cat & Dog Bagless - great suction with no bags to worry about
I blow it out with my air compressor once or twice a year, but it is self-cleaning, I just help it along
A grouse vac that I would buy again no worries. It is a little cumbersome to drag around, but that is all

  • I'm tossing between the miele c3 vs dreame v11/v10. can anyone recommend one over the other one? I'm pro Miele for the hepa filter and build quality, but pro Dreame because of the cordless convience

  • Cordless makes vacuuming a breeze. Gamechanger imo. v11 is a fantastic vacuum.

  • Anyone using Samsung Jet 90 Complete?
Currently available at $750 including Clean Station. Is it worth?

    • Hi where's it available for that price with the clean station please?

      • Samsung EPP store

        • Wow wish I had access to that, great price. Thanks

  • again thanks for all the responses!!
