Roof Racks for Tapered Roof Rails

I tried to fit these to a MY21 Kia Sorento today. Did not work well. The clips kept coming off the gentle taper on the roof rails. See here.

Rhino, Thule et al still don't have specifically fitted variants for the MY21 Sorento due to corona virus related delays - corona seems to be a convenient excuse for plenty these days. Anyway… Do not want to give Kia >$500 for their genuine reaming accessories.

Does anyone know of any universal roof racks that can cope with this taper?

  • Your best bet will be something specifically designed for your car, unless you want to cheapen out and regret it down the track (again…). Don't look for "universal"

Genuine are $509 inc fitting… You don't need to pay for fitting, so call them up and ask how much for just supply, and what the ETA is

    • Thanks, and understood. But while I don't mind paying for specifically made (brand name) from those who specialise with these things I am averse to paying double that to dealers who don't add that much value IMO.

      • As I said, call and ask for a price without fitting. Likely be $400 or less.

I'd recommend Rhino Racks or Thule etc which are designed for the car itself (though as you said, likely on back-order as is everything right now), but not no-name generic, universal stuff.

One of those things where you pay for quality and the right fitment. $99 aint it

You’re on the money. It’s one of those things you don’t skimp on. Apart from anything else how do you know if they are on properly and not going to fly off, taking what ever is on your roof with them.

These are a perfect fit for the Rav4 GX though.

Phew, was about to return the car.
Can finally go for a kayak.

  • SCA have 4 that fit your car (https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/shop-by-category/4wd-and-o…) and offer fitting.

Why not buy a set and get a refund if they do not fit perfectly when the SCA person fits them?

    • Thanks. All the review comments suggest these need additional fitting kits, not included, for the specific car. I suspect the MY21 Sorento might not be available.

(I actually have a couple of spare sets of Thule racks that could probably be repurposed with a proper fitting kit too but I'm looking for a quicker solution.)

  • Check the car rails and see if there are screw or connect holes in the inner side of them. Those home a are used to hold the rack in place and prevent sliding along rails.

I got a pair of Thule from Roof Rack Centre which I've used for my past 4 cars. I just buy different fittings to suit the car ($50 for each fitting set).

    Thule racks cost about $300.

    • No holes.

These tapered rails look like they need lateral compression from both sides (like a clamp / vice) rather than a hook.

I too have some old Thule racks but no fittings for the Sorento are available yet.
