GoPro HERO9 Black $548 @ Harvey Norman

130

Great price on GoPro Hero9 Black, appears to be $50 cheaper than most retailers and you don't need to pay for the GoPro Subscription to get this offer like on the GoPro Website.

Noticed JB have now matched: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/gopro-hero9-black-5k-hype…

It's only $11 more on the GoPro website and that includes a 32GB micro SD card and carry case along with the 1 year subscription that gives you discounts on genuine accessories like spare batteries. Seems worth it IMHO.

It was $529 for the bundle with extra battery on the GoPro website about 2 weeks ago, that was even better.

Posting this for those who don't like subscriptions it's a flat out price, no catches and you can pickup instore. I agree for those who need/want the subscription it could be beneficial to go that route. Though as far as cheap accessories go I found this: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/sp-gadgets-ultimate-sport-ac… looks better value than the genuine stuff, has anyone got or used this before that could recommend it?

Is there really a catch? The subscription can be cancelled immediately and you'll still have the benefits for the next 12 months.

Immediate pickup is good, but if you're not in a rush, I would suggest waiting for another deal like that $529 one which came with a second battery and 64GB micro SD card along with the subscription.

I haven't tried that brand specifically, but I've tried lots of cheap ebay accessories and the genuine ones I've tried (chest mount, bike clamp mount, suction cup mount, clamp, clips) are far better.

I think if the camera isn't going to be used in a rough environment the cheap accessories are fine, but if it's actually going to be used as an action camera I would suggest considering genuine accessories, or at least third-party brands that are known to be well-made.

          Really helpful, thanks!!

    • Also they have free extra battery ocassionally if you wait for it.

I agree this is not that great of a deal.

    • BTW the GoPro 9 + battery + 64GB + 1 year subscription deal is back at $529 on the GoPro site .

Having an issue with a prior GoPro camera, purchased from GoPro directly, I would rather pay more and get it from an Australian retailer, so you don't get shirked on statutory warranty, which GoPro happily did, and I was left with a lemon camera.

I broke the battery door off one of my old GoPros, purchased locally. I got in touch with GoPro directly who sent me a replacement battery door for free. Was pretty happy with that.

      What issue did you have?

      • I purchased a GoPro Fusion direct, but the software didn't work on PC, so the support staff led me and others to wait for an upcoming update… Months later no update came, in fact they closed the division responsible for the camera, and I was stuck with a lemon of a camera and missed the return window waiting for this promised fix.

        • Oh… I would imagine even if it was purchased locally you might face an uphill battle as it looks like other people have managed to run GoPro Fusion Studio on their Windows PCs. 🤷‍♂️

        • Yes, I don't know why GoPro do this with their product lines. They did it with the Session and then the Fusion. It's enough of a warning sign for me to avoid other GoPro products.

They should really just focus on the Hero and maybe go down the route of developing more accessories/attachments for the Media Mod. Their Android app 'Quik' was surprisingly good too, so maybe a bit more investment into that - I compiled a road cycling clip using the app (which featured me experiencing a very painful crash) and the app was soooo easy to use, and even included the speed data (i.e. my crash was 32kph to 0kph in about 3 seconds haha…).

I've also read that there are major overheating issues with the Hero 9… I'm prepared to throw money at them to upgrade from my Hero 5, but they're not giving me any compelling reason to do so.

            @brotherfranciz:

Yes, I don't know why GoPro do this with their product lines. They did it with the Session and then the Fusion.

I think that was from the period of time (~2015-2018) where GoPro seemed to have lost their way. It looks like they tried to flood the market with products to cover every segment, then got blindsided with competition from cheaper cameras like the Yi action cams. They spread themselves too thinly and didn't release any particularly inspiring products.

Between 2015-2018 they released the HERO+LCD, HERO+, HERO5 Black, HERO5 Session, HERO6 Black, Fusion, HERO (2018), HERO 7 White, HERO 7 Silver, HERO 7 Black, and the infamous Karma Drone. That's 11 products in 3 years.

They were pushed to the brink of bankruptcy in 2017/2018. It looks like they realised they had to trim the fat, so in 2019 they only released the HERO 8 Black and the Max, and in 2020 the HERO 9 Black.

I was ready to abandon them after the HERO 7 as they weren't making anything compelling, until they put some effort into HyperSmooth 2.0 with the HERO 8 which was definitely worth the money for my use. DJI then released the Osmo Action which once again tempted me, but the HERO 9 ended up being a better camera. Hopefully they continue this trend and not go back to throwing everything at the wall.

            • @eug: I have had very bad experiences with returns and refunds with GoPro Direct (2 yrs ago, back to their Singapore warehouse).
If it was not for Paypal coming to my aid at the time, i'd probably be out of pocket about $550.
Unless they have cleaned up their act since, I would not reccommend buying direct.
Australian retailer it is for me..
              Once bitten twice shy…

*Edit: sorry., was meant to be a reply to @mwalks comment above, but i do agree with your views of their product lineup mess in prior years.

They have a local presence in Perth, and you pay GST on it. Have you tried ACCC?

      • When I purchased from GoPro, it was charged from The Netherlands, and sent from Singapore. It's approx 3 years ago, and even though I love my GoPro stuff, I stay away from buying directly as the ACCC doesn't have such long reach or the time, really, for such small issues :(

Where exactly is this local presence in Perth?
I've googled and just can't find anything.
I'm having to deal with Gopro overseas, im assuming the Singapore support team and they are painful, so would love to go to a local support centre

  • Grab a bundle with the spare battery, I didn't think I'd need it but 20mins into using it and I can see I'll need it. Gopros site had super express delivery! Very impressed.
