Don't do it! Spent over a decade hooked on this game. Love it though.

    • Haha yeah I can imagine. So much content for a fiver.

    • Shadowlands sucked my group back in. First 12hr session I felt like death. Never again

  • +6

This will cost you far, far more than $5.

  • The EBGames listing is wrong.
The base game now includes Legion and Battle for Azeroth

Plus the level cap for the base game is 1-50. You need Shadowloands to go from 50 to 60.

  • Save your money on the monthly subscription and plan Guild Wars 2 instead, it's free to play.

    • Enjoyed GW2 but nowhere near the same experience. A month of WoW and all it's content for 2 coffees a month is reasonable.

      • That's fair, but looking at the bigger picture; you're paying over $100 per year.
I have friends that have played both and they say its not that different, just differing art styles.
$100+ per year for a game or free for something very similar? Just putting the options out there, this is OzBargain, afterall,

        • +6

It's nowhere near similar though. Completely different experience, features. endgame, community, quality of gameplay etc. I'm sure there's people that prefer GW2 over WoW, but vice versa would be far larger userbase and you really cannot say they are equivalent.

Also, people are paying $100+ for PS5/Xbox games nowadays. That's nothing for a whole year of content to some.

        • +1

“say its not different” dude its day and night at the end game, why do you thinj Gw2 isnt as popular

          • -1

@Freestyle: I wasn't after an argument as to which one is better, just that there is a 'similar' option that is free to play.
Sure, it's not as popular, but they don't have the advertising budget that Blizzard has.
There's still a few million that play.
To put into perspective; it's $12.50 a month (i think someone here mentioned this), that's $150 per year.
It's been out for 16 years - that's $2400 if you've been playing since day 1. That doesn't include the cost of the game!
Currently GW2 is free to play for base game and both expansions are about $30 from memory, but at most it's been $80 for base game and $60 for each of the 2 expansions. Still well short of the $2400.
Again, not trying to start an argument just offering up an OzB alternative for those that don't want to get roped in to a monthly fee when there are other enjoyable options available.

            • @Rockgod70: Its no where close to a few million that play, its barely a few hundred thousand and probably in lower tens of thousands in Australia, marketing is not its only issues, if marketing was the only thing world of warcraft was good at, then how do you explain the hundreds of thousands of twitch viewers during major patches/expansion launches?

The way you word it is misleading, WoW is a much different experience in every single way compared to GW2

lol $2400, you are just purposely bringing in big numbers for no reason. if $16 per month is a lot to you, you shouldnt be playing games, go study/find work. Priorities

            • @Rockgod70: It's over 16 years dude. You spend on dam coffee! You need to take a seat on the Frozen Throne and just chill

      • +2

        2 coffees a month?

$17.25 per month = $8.60 coffees, where are you getting those?

Totally agree that WoW content is worth it, but it's more like a coffee a week.

        • -1

Fair point, was looking at USD price as pay in GBP. Still worth it!

        • +1

Where ya'll getting your coffees from? $1 from 7-11 so quite abit of coffees on my budget.

WoTLK was the best expansion IMO.

        • Starbucks/Zaraffa's frappachino's are all in this price range.

      • Where do you buy $2.50 coffee from?

    • +1

and play a game with shitter end game progession, no oceanic servers, like 1/10th the playerbase

      why

  • +3

Save your money, the new model from blizzard is buy only the current expansion and the monthly subscription to play, once playing you can pay for the monthly sub using in game gold if you make enough

    • This is a better alternative for those wanting to trial the game or existing players wishing to spin up a second account.

    • Are we talking 24/7 farming amounts of gold or can casual players maintain a gold-only subscription?

I wish they had this model back in vanilla, I remember having like 50k from just reselling rune/moon cloths from am to pm (perks of being on this game day and night)

      • +1

It's possible to maintain gold-only subscription from just playing the game casually if you can be smart about managing your gold, e.g. not splurging on vanity items (mounts/toys/transmog). You might also be somewhat restricted with high end progression as it requires quite a bit of gold to spend on expensive gear upgrades and best consumables/enhancements.

        • +1

Agreed, not very hard at all. Never bothered with the high-end raiding anyway as LFR/LFD still lets you experience the vast majority of the content without having to invest the time/gold/skills. Didn't bother with professions or buying upgrades or consumables, just sold everything I found on the AH. Get hooked and waste enough time playing, and it's feasible to never have to buy a Blizzard game with actual money again.

    • Or just some fraction of an hour at work vs hours in game. Yeah cool idea…?

  • This is worth buying because the 1 month free is worth about 16 dollars, I believe?

All the rest of this stuff now comes free with subscription, so don't assign any value to it:
    Original World of Warcraft game
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Expansion
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion
    World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Expansion
World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Expansion
World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor Expansion
    Strategy guides

  • I have been playing since late 2007, just around end of BC days. Have loved this game ever since but I finally quit playing in Shadowlands because the expansion is totally rubbish. It’s designed to waste your time through transport and running around instead of spending any actual time on unique content which is basically non existent once you are at cap.

I’m in a strong guild of 500 and any given time we used to have 50-60 players playing and socialising. It’s dropped to less than 15 now and dropping. Haven’t seen this big of a drop this early in any expansion.

I hope the drop in quality is only because of COVID and WFH restrictions and hopefully WoW will bounce back with next expansion.

  • Sad part is every time I try and get hooked I play for like 3 days and then get bored. I can never get that same itch from when I started in 2005.

    • You should check out WoW Classic!

      • +2

I played for a little bit at the beginning and unfortunately gave up at around level 35.

I hate being old, it's like there's no time and things feel less fun.

  • Honestly wish there was a subscription for an ultra casual like me where it's more based on the amount of time you play.

    • Move to Korea. (not sure if any other countries charger per time). China changed from pay per time to monthly I believe.

      • +2

Okay nice I might move to Korea. Which one? North sounds good this time of year.

        • Sir yes sir. Sir.

  • Waste of $5 and social life.

    • +3

Sign me up! Wasting my social life will save me far more than $5. Its the true OzB way.

    • +4

Jokes on you, I never had a social life to waste.
