no deal here , only $59 a month sim with $500 gc should be considered as a deal )

    • +3

$160 difference, but if you're claiming the entire amount as a tax deduction you might be $9 better off with this deal (depending of course on your marginal rate). You also get almost double the data.

      • +2

i took the $59 plan with $500 gc last year with 80gb.. with covid and working from home. i barely went above 5gb a month! prior i could easily hit 30 to 40gb a month on the road. no wonder telstra didnt mind pushing huge data packages.

        • +1

A lot of people just hotspot at home and don't pay for a broadband connection.

          • @frowny: unfortunately 80gb for broadband isnt sufficient for me.. even if a couple with total 160gb isnt enuff. on average i use 800gb per month. last month it was 1.8TB… work related.. wish i could just do with mobile.. but….

          • @frowny: I juggled into sim plans for 9 months for home internet when I couldn't get wired broadband.

  • +2

Time to pull the trigger? Been waiting since boxing day :(

    • +2

Free Iphone XR seems to be a good deal if you need that phone

      • +1

        $779 rrp

      • -3

Good spare one to hand to your kids.

        • +19

An iPhone? For KIDS? I can't wrap my head around that.

          • @lordra: I have a 3 going 4 year old iphone XR i'm about to replace, you can't wrap your head around passing an old phone?

            • +5

@Jackkkkkk: And then they want a new one. And then they'll spend $80k each on iPhones in their lifetime.

              It's an expensive decision.

              • +1

@justtoreply: If they want a new one then they can work for it.

my phone is in top condition, still at 89% battery health. I could sell for a good penny

            • @Jackkkkkk: Can't be more than 2 years plus change since purchase.

        • +1

Yeah, not good for normal people?
Frankly, the only reason I need an iPhone is to get into clubhouse. Otherwise, Android all the way.

Anyway, I gifted my son S21 FE that cost me 999, so I will just show myself out…

        • +5

I think "back in the day" it was more feasible to do lend-me-downs with iPhones. I'm talking during the iPhone 3G-iPhone SE period.

It got more pricey with the iPhone 6-iPhone 8+ period. I would've switched to an ex-flagship Used Android model for the kids instead (sell the iPhone and recoup costs).

But it's just insane with the iPhone 10-iPhone 13 models. Y'all people are either rich, or stupid, or both. Just switch over to midrange Android phones at that point.

          • @Kangal: THIS ^^^ is what I was trying to say @Jackkkkkk. I considered someone well off if they had a chunky desktop pc with a 15" monitor growing up, that had to be shared among 3 kids. Kids can make do with mid-range market phones.

      • +3

Still have to pay almost $1200 for the plan. Which is crazy unless you need 150gb a month. Otherwise the pre paid plans end up cheaper.

  • What are the termination fees for each plan?

    • Half of the total cost

    • +1

ETC of $594 plus $500 "Maximum Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee".

      • Oof. That's more than it costs to keep it? That makes no sense unless you receive a phone with the plan. Are you sure?

      • I read this and got very worried, as I'm about to port out of my Telstra JB plan. Luckily when I took out the plan in Oct last year they didn't have this new fee (doesn't appear in my T&Cs/CIS anywhere) so I think I'm safe. Just need to pay the pro-rata ETC which is fine. Tax deduction and all…

        • JB have just introduced it this year.

  • +7

$500/year you call a deal? not for me

    • +2

      Tax deduction, Mate

      • Hmmm
        Something to think ….
        Thank you

      • Noob here, how do you claim tax on this? like for work?

        • +3

For work related portion. One could argue you bought it solely for work and kept a separate mobile plan for private

  • +1

$30/month is pretty good for 150Gb/month with telstra network.

And if one can write off part of the $89/month on tax (business purposes) it will be even better value…

    • Indeed!

    • And use the gift card to buy a phone, then salary sacrifice it.

      • Do you buy the phone and then claim through salary sacrifice?

        • Obviously check with your own work before you doing anything.

For me, we just give them the invoice and they reimburse us for what we've paid (so not out of pocket), then it gets salary sacrificed on our next pay.

  • Just about to post the same thing. Well done.

I ported out last Dec, went for a cheap Voda and ported in today with that $89 deal. Good enough for me.

    • +2

Is the $10 credit automatic or you need to ask for it the be applied to your account?

      • +1

I asked for the $10 discount and they said ok with $99 plan, but no for $69 plan with this round of promo.

  • +5

    Use the $700 on a PS5

  • +1

For anyone who got the last gift card deal, what was the expiry on the card? Thinking maybe I could use this for PS5/Xbox Series X later/end of this year.

    • +2

      No expiry on JB GC

      • +1

        Mine says 2099 :P

        • +3

          22 years after 2077

      • +1

Unless the company goes under. .. haha

        • +1

JB have been raking it in during the pandemic. Unless they stuff up real bad, I don't see that happening soon.

          • @Trishool: If they cash out and the buyer screws up like what happened with DSE ???

            • @affinity: But isn't in owned by The Good Guys?

              • +4

@Trishool: I thought jbhifi owned the good guys

                • @buckster: They do

                  • @Madbro: And DSE was owned by Woolworths once upon a time. Hoarding gift cards brings to mind a certain saying about fools and their money…

                    • @xyron: Yes, that's the kind of cash out and burn that I would be worried about; let's hope JB doesn't do that kind of disaster.

Has anyone tried signing up as new number then porting current telstra number across via live chat?

    • I do this every boxing day sale. Just keep moving the old phone number to the new plan

      • I've done this twice now.
as far as I know the process is to explain what you want to do and then have the old plan cancelled with the number you want to replace the new plan.

I would be interested to know if they will just directly swap the numbers I always get a bit scared even though I'm assured the number is reserved and it will replace the other one

        • I had signed up for this y'day - got a new number because I'm currently on a boost plan. I ported my original number to back to telstra pre-paid this morning and contacted live support to move my postpaid services to pre-paid number. They said that it is not possible to move the post-paid services over to another number. Not sure if I'm asking for the right thing. Am I missing anything?

          • +3

@AussieBee: Telstra support in their app is useless; you can get things done, but many suffer many hours, days and even weeks before they find a good person whom can do their job.

            • @affinity: Thanks. I'll try visiting the local Telstra store tomorrow and see if they can help.

          • @AussieBee: Ask the other way around: Ask to have the pre-paid number retained and applied to your post-paid account.
It takes 24-hours. They convert your pre-paid into a post-paid account (1), then attribute the number to your target post-paid account (2) and “cancel” the original post-paid account (1). Best bit is that the SIM card from pre-paid account (1) can be left in the phone throughout the whole process and doesn’t need to be swapped out at any point. Cons is that you can lose coverage for a few hours as they do the transition from pre-paid to post-paid.

    • Does anyone know if the number needed to be originally with Telstra to do this?
My mobile number was originally with Optus. I've jumped around (Telstra, Voda, Optus, Telstra).
I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that the number needed to have originally been with Telstra for this to work. Something along the lines of Telstra can't reserve it unless it was originally theirs?
Would hate to loose my current number.

      • +1

No. Number does not originally needed to be from Telstra.

  • Do I still need to port out for 30 days to be considered a “new” customer?

    • This might be relevant for you.
The idea is to shop around… try other JBs if one says no.

  • +3

Previous deal had $0 upfront for a Samsung S21 worth $1250 and even if you don't like android, you can easily sell for more than $700.

  • If anyone goes to the Store tomorrow - could you guys take a photo of the deal? It would be much appreciated.
Planning on going on Sunday. If it isn't uploaded, i'll take
a photo if i go through with it.

    • +1

I got the deal today, and the guy at the store says it's not supposed to be advertised - there are no pictures of the deal. It's in store only and today was the last day

      • Dang it….guess i gotta wait for the next one

  • +1

Seems like a bad deal as I am on a 50gb telstra jbhifi plan for $25pm.

    • If your one have 5G connection, Keep it! $25/month is a bargain.

      • +2

I remember them sending me a notice saying "5g was free until october" then when it came to september it said "5g will be cut off and can be purchased".

But even till now after the telstra 5g trial / free period, i am still getting 5g. So definitely keeping it at the moment. lol.

    • Where was this deal?

      • +2

It was a deal around 1.5-2yr ago before covid hit.
$45 JB Hifi Telstra Plan, then i got them to apply 2x $10 discounts, for 2 different promotions, making it $25pm for the life of the plan (until i cancel it).

Seems like they have stopped giving out life time discounts, and appears nowadays they will do 6months or 12months discounts instead, but depends on the agent you speak to via chat.

  • Basically a PS5 when in stock, and $30 or so PM is cheap. I pay more than that Sim only for Vodafone.

    • +2

You might want to check your maths there. Hint: it's PS5 and $89pm.

  • May be a silly question - Is this the same network gurantee if you go via Telstra directly vs getting Telstra via JB?

    • +1

      Same Telstra:)

    • Appears to be same Telstra and doesn't seem to work the same as a MVNO.
It doesn't appear to be part of their "wholesale network" which is the one most MVNOs use, like Aldi.

  • Can I sign up for a new number on the $99 plan, then immediately cancel upon receiving the $700 gift card?
What would the cancellation cost be?

    • +1

      Cancellation cost is $594

      • +2

JB have introduced a new "Maximum Voucher
Reimbursement Cancellation Fee" of $500 on top of the ETC!

        • What does maximum voucher reimbursement cancellation fee of $500 mean exactly ? Like how does it affect the deal I just don’t quite understand, thanks

          • +1

@Splashtash: If you take it at face value, it simply means they will also charge you a proportional fee to cover the 'cost' of the voucher so it might be that your ETF is half of the monthly plan fee x 12 months + up to $500 cancellation fee for the voucher.

Simply means the value you get from signing up then cancelling after a day disappears as you then end up paying for the voucher anyway.

            • @stigsphilocousin: Thanks, sounded like that but wasn’t sure

              • @Splashtash: Lets say i cancel in 8months time, do i still incur the $500 voucher fee? A pro rata of it?
                Or just the ETF?

                • +1

@p-plater: On the T&Cs of the plan, it says pro-rata charge depending on how many months of the minimum period you have left with $500 being the full charge, presumably, if you signed up and cancelled prior to the end of the first billing cycle.

EDIT: This means that if you did cancel within 24 hours, you will have to pay the maximum ETF of $594 plus the maximum voucher penalty of $500 = $1094 which is only a month's plan fee away from the full cost of the 12 month contract if the ETF wasnt set the way it is meaning you pretty much overpay for the deal.

                  • @stigsphilocousin: Cheers, wasnt looking to cancel immediately
But potentially sometime before the 12m
Looks like you're saying we pro rata both the ETF as well as the voucher penalty then?

                    • +1

@p-plater: Yep; the ETF is half the monthly plan fee x months left while the calculation for the voucher fee is different: although the maximum fee is $500, the pro-rata charge is worked out on the actual voucher amount divided by 12 ($700/12 = $58.33 per month)

If we take on figures as an example, if you cancel at the 8 month period, your total fee will be:

                      ETF ($49.50 x 4 months) = $198
                      plus
                      Voucher penalty ($58.33 x 4 months) = $233.32
                      = $431.32 all up plus pro-rata usage.

    • See above

    • +1

be careful if u do it too many times they will ban you from signing up via Jb-hifi in future.

  • Planning to buy iPhone 12 Pro Max which is $1849. So get this and get remaining gift cards at Suncorp at 5% off? Surely should work right?

    • I did this when the 12 came out with no issues.
Note that there's limits at Suncorp.
