Advice with Adding Tyre Ballast to Tractor

Hi, I'm relatively new to farming and owning a tractor.

Does anyone have experience/recommendations in adding water ballast in the rear tyres to help with lifting & better traction?

I've got an adaptor from Amazon to add water via the tyre valve, just unsure of the process & whether strait water or an additive is better?

Cheers

    Do you need the ballast?

Have you tried the tractor on your property without it?

I assume you are lifting bales from a front fork setup? Often leaving a slasher on the back, or carryall with weights permanently helps with balance.

Do you have hilly terrain and an AWD tractor?

This is a decent video that covers all the steps if you decide to proceed. Clean tap water is fine. Some add coolant to avoid freezing but not really an issue in Australia. Take the weight off the wheel and empty tyre of air. Fill up about 3/4 water using your adapter then the rest air set at your normal pressure.

Roll the valve around to the point where you want the water level and then fill it. It will make life easier when it comes time to re-inflate and/or install the valve stem seal.

  • Looks like you need to find a farmer forum.

  • What tractor is it?

When I was on the tractors at work we had a heap of information available that was sourced from the owners manual, the manufacturer website and the dealership. One of the tyre manufacturers or distributors also had info available which from memory listed how many litres of water to add for a given tyre size amongst other things.
