JB Hi-Fi and others - are they up to the usual trick again?

Hi all
bought my son a car radio with BT,ipod connection etc just before xmas from jb, went back again today to get some speakers as they were having a 30% off car audio sale ,decided to look at the radio i had bought before xmas and bugger me,they had jacked up the price by approx $60,then with the so called discount ended up being nearly the same price i paid before xmas within a couple of dollars

Second one, went to my chemist at northland on xmas eve to buy some perfume,on the window was a sign saying reduced from $59.99 to $32.99,,on the box was a price of $29.99
.
Have others had similar experiances?

  • when you bought the car radio, was it on sale when you got it, or you actually paid full price for it?

  • every car radio is on sale isnt it,prices crossed, new prices written, not a catalogue special

  • Both could be explained, by using normal price. Its legit to say the price normally is $59.99 then reduced to $32.99

Grocery stores run weekly specials - so one week they give more off than another week. At the end of the week the price goes back up. Nothing says a retailer cant reduce a price one week, then increase it next week, when the sale is over. And then give a discount on this new price. In the case of the Chemist the marked price being lower might mean they have to sell it at that lower price.

What isnt right if their "normal" price is $10, then they increase it to $20 and give you 50% off. Obviously SRP is a base to decide what should be normal.

    with $29.99 sticker on box

    • Yep addressed that in an edit while you were reading it…

And then give a discount on this new price. In the case of the Chemist the marked price being lower might mean they have to sell it at that lower price.

yes they did sell it for $29.99
But the issue is that the paper sign on the window says "was $59.99,now $32.99",but the box had a $29.99 sticker on it from prior, seems like misrepresentation of the truth. Forgot to mention that it scanned at $32.99,but after i said the price was lower on the box they then overode the price

    • I understand what you are saying, its a matter of interpretation on what "was" means.

Was = it's normal selling price
      or
Was = it's last selling price

The sticker could have been left over from a previous sale, which could have been on there for months ie had been reduced on sale to $29.99 then went back up to $59.99. The sales person missing removal of the sticker after the sale had been completed. They did do the correct thing and sell it at the lower of the two prices.

Or as Geewhiz below mentions, it could have been old stock someone found in a store room and just added to the display without looking at the sticker. If they had really meant to deceive they would have removed the sticker before putting it on display.

Now if 29.99 was the SRP or their normal price on current stock, then agree it would have been the wrong thing to do.

Now I am not trying to defend the store, just trying to say that not everything is black and white.

  • There are a lot of places these days selling perfumes at greatly reduced prices all the time. Technically there's nothing wrong with saying it's reduced from whatever the rrp is. Your $29.99 bottle is obviously just older reduced stock. It does have a limited shelf life though, so whether you got as good a buy for that price as you might have done on newer stock at $32.99 is debatable.

I was in homeart a few years ago, and overheard one sales person saying to the other, "how much shall we say it was?" The fact that they draw the regular selling price out of thin air is pretty irrelevant though, really, when most of what they sell is not worth buying anyway.

If we're planning on making a big purchase, we tend to research prices a bit beforehand anyway.

  • From JB? You'll be lucky if it works! If it doesn't, they will violate consumer legislation, so be warned!

JB pull this all the time…I've gotten so used to it that I now plan for it, and if you're lucky you can catch them out for a good discount! ;)

Last time I got a win I had just received a catalogue that was not due to expire for 2 weeks or so, with a TV in it for $1591. They were having a weekend 15% off all TVs sale during this period. I checked the price on Fri instore, still $1591, took photo on phone. I went back Sat, lo-and-behold the price was now magically $1891…overnight $300 increase with the 15% off would have made it $1607. Armed with the cattledog & photo I had a chat to the sales guy, who then had to get the manager. They weren't happy, they were literally crapping themselves when I pointed out that the fine print on the cattledog clearly showed the expiry date!

They didn't wanna play, but as soon as I pointed out that the TV was touted as a new model just introduced in that catalogue & had never sold for $1891, then said those magic words…Fair Trading and ACCC, like lightning I got 15% off the original price making it $1352! :)

good review you wrote, nice ethics they have, most of the salesmen in JB have attitude, its either their way or no way,

    • attitude? what do you expect when the store manager of a certain jb hifi(who shall remain nameless!) wears a track suit during work hours! and no, he didn't just come from the gym!

      • Lol, I hope it was Adidas!

        As BatLeb would say, he's a triple-threat! ;)

  • No one Australian electronic retailers are going broke.

    More power to online sellers.

Don't bother telling me they're a business and they can charge what they want because that doesn't excuse their misleading and deceptive conduct.

    • I was going to post about this yesterday but since I just signed up I had to wait a day.
