14" Laptop Suggestions for Under $800 Budget

Need to buy a laptop for my little sister. 2nd year uni in primary teaching. Not a heavy gamer. Just for assignment and web browsing, and online learning without lags. It needs to be 14" for mobility and our max budget is $800.

I am aware both laptops has 1366 x 768 display resolution. I am open to suggestion of better models at similar value.

Lenovo E495 $688 before 3.5% cashreward cashback.

  • Are you going to be connected to external display most of the time? Otherwise the 1366x768 display would be very difficult to live with. I'll rather get a second hand / refurbished business laptop with good hardware (i.e. ThinkPad T470 would be within price range). Otherwise check out Dell Outlets. For example this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 would be under $700 with FHD display.

    • wow, what does dell refurb actually means? brand new with repaired defects or used and repaired?

      • Condition is listed on each item. As new means open box, refurb means was faulty and now fixed, scratch and dent means a refurb that has cosmetic damage. In this case it's refurbished.

  • I'd recommend a better model than the 495. I had my motherboard replaced already and i only switched it on about 3 times since getting it.

  • what about getting a used laptop (perhaps 4th gen or later) for ~$300 with a 1080p display ?

  • both are yuck 1366 x 768, screen deserves to be burnt

  • Merged from Acer Aspire 5 14", Intel Core i3, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD $699 or Dell Inspiron 5000 14" 2-in-1 Laptop $719

      Hi,

At $699 from Acer it isn't cheap.

You can get an Acer Aspire 5 14-inch i3-8130U/4GB/128GB SSD Laptop for $496 from HN and add some RAM and have a lightweight Laptop.

If this is going to to be a Primary use in Classroom Laptop, think about Battery Life and that you will need to tow a charger along or look at something with longer battery life.

Also, consider if having a Pen or Stylus is required.

      • in that case, the dell might be better as it is touchscreen and double as a tab
