TCL 55" C715 4K QLED Android TV $995 Delivered (Was $1299); 50" C715 $799 (Was $999) @ Buy Smarte & Appliance Central

190

I went to HN and Bing Lee and sussed out the model before buying cheaper online (even at JB they said they would price match but that they only had the display model and anything else would take til April). Prices at JB, TGG, HN etc all around $1300, a few of the smaller shops have it lower but these two are the cheapest. Looks pretty premium with a metal bezel and the stands can sit closer to the middle for a short entertainment unit. Preview content looked pretty good in store but I will have to wait til mine arrives to be sure. The OS isn't the fastest but android is better than whatever Hisense have atm. QTY at these retailers unknown.

Wouldn't the Hisense be better in every way? An operating system doesn't bother me much if I use external device

    • Which Hisense at this price? The S8 doesn't even come close. You would need to fork out a few more hundred dollars for the Q8 is you want a Hisense panel that's better.

      • Yeah the TCL came in the middle of these, seemed quite a bit better than the S8, though I think I could of got that for ~$750 at least.

        • You have chosen well. The C715 is a much better panel than the Hisense S8. The Q8 is a gorgeous TV but also costs 40% more. May as well then fork out another hundred and get a 9 series Sony.

@sinners007: And by that logic you are soon at the 85" oled

            • @keyclacker: Gorgeous TV. Highly recommeded ;)

              • @sinners007: You talking about the Q8?

                • @placard: I was responding to keyclacker's 85" OLED post ;)

Q8 isn't bad either but I'd pay the extra $100 and grab the 9 series Sony.

                  • @sinners007: X900 or X950?

I've read about people having problems with these and Sony customer service horrendous compared with pleasant Hisense service and 3 year warranty.

              • @sinners007: hi how do u compare the TCL c715 with samsung TU8000/8100?

  • +1

I can vouch for the 50" version of this TV that I purchased for $700. The Android OS out of the box was horrendous and the OTA firmware wasn't working but, once TCL manually sent me the latest firmware and the TV updated, it worked well. The OS was smoother and the default picture settings were great. It has since received OTA updates. Pound for pound at this price point, a tough TV to beat.

  • Buy this and save 2.5k, or is it worth the investment in purchasing the LGCX65 OLED for $3500?

    Purely for watching purposes

    • +1

I was looking at the OLEDs today and the difference really is night and day. However even OLED can't save FTA, which looks like absolute shit on them (like it does everything else). Up to you whether the price can be justified (and its $3000 for the cheapest OLEDs…)

      • Hmm it's definitely tough. I don't really use FTA at all though, mainly streaming and 4K playing/PS5.

I've a local Good Guys willing to price match the above model for $3500, but do you think it's purely for movies where it excels, or also live sport etc? ( If streaming through the right source)

          Go for the LG

      • +1

Who watches FTA channels these days?

        • +1

Me, too much of it ;-)

Just wish that they networks didn't waste so much bandwidth by putting same broadcast on different channels.

        • I don't. Haven't had an aerial cable connected for 5 years or more.

          • @placard: Single aerial and 4 channel PVR — Fetch Mighty, works a treat most of the time.

    • LG - oled65cxpta ?

      Star Rating
      4.5 star

      Energy used each year
      502 kWh

      • Picture quality worth it?

        • My 43" is big enough — LG 4K uses just 216 kWh by comparison. The 65" is way too big unless you have a theater room for it and the power consumption needs to be added to your audio and other gear. The TCO will be very high even if it is really good otherwise. Perhaps it is a fair price to pay if it is your main source of entertainment.

          • @affinity: 65" is too small for our living room

          • +1

@affinity: I feel 65" is the standard tv size for a family room now, 85 is home theatre size.

      • 500 kwh at 25c = 125$ a year for electricity.. That's like 30c a day

    • By jove, how is that even a question sir?

Too high for power consumption, not worth it for me:

    Star Rating
    4.5 star

    Energy used each year
    381 kWh

    https://www.energyrating.gov.au/calculator
    TCL - 55c715

    • Yep, and the 55" uses quite a bit more power than the 50", iirc. However, this is replacing a ~7yo samsung which I can't imagine uses too much less…

      • +1

I replaced a good old Samsung that was using 140 watts (FHD) with an LG 4K a while back that only uses about 70 watts. It is much better, but it will still take a while to pay for itself. Still use the old Samsung as an adhoc monitor for headless servers occasionally.

    • I think the higher the Star rating the the less power it consume? So 4.5 stars out of 5 is excellent.

      • It's out of 6 stars.

        • Yeah, I think different products have different ranges; and I'm not sure, but I think that the star ratings have changed over the years to newer methods for calculating them.

    • +3

I'm still rocking a Samsung F8500 plasma. That thing consumes so much power, but also heats my lounge room nicely in winter, saving on heating costs ;)

I wouldn't change it no matter how much power it uses… The picture is sublime.

      • +4

If I still had my plasma, it would still show the GTA vice city weapon box and stars in the corner after this many years.

      • Yes but does it cost you money to cool the room in summer?

  • -1

I used 2 TCL TVs while on holidays and based on their responsiveness channel surfing and skow interface, I'd never ever buy one or recommend anyone else do the same.

In fact if I had the choice I would not have a TV over having a TCL.

    • Which models? I've had an older TCL TV that was horrendous but the C715 Android is as responsive as my Vodafone Android box.

My $4,000 top of the range Sammy F8500's UI is painful as well but, it's also a 7yr old TV that hasn't had any firmware updates for years.

  • +1

    Personally I don't get the hate for these two things;

Energy ratings, in general.. Is it the cost that bothers people? $100 vs $50 a year is not a big difference for people spending $1k on a tv. And that's if you run it every day.

Ui - unless specifically due to factors that a Chromecast TV or similar can't cover. The things are like $100 and include a remote too.

What I'm most worried about is picture quality. That you can't change and are stuck with. My Hisense q8 65" has some dirty screen effect and it drives me nuts. Hisense say it's not a manufacturer error and won't even exchange it.. The thing was less than 5 weeks old.

    • Energy usage is important for all sorts of reasons; your carbon footprint is one, your cost of ownership is another, how much extra real value do you get if you are a person with less good eyesight …. I'm sure there are other reasons. TCO is important to me, other factors weigh beyond that. If I was a millionaire with plenty of ample income, then TCO may be a non-issue, but other factors would still be.

    • Have you tried different settings?

    • are you are using netflix to determine the dirty screen effect?

      • It's on all content from all sources, mostly noticeable in dark or light motion shots.

        • Any LCD will have some degree of DSE. That's what comes with the tech.

  • i got the 50 inch c715 in august last year for 700 from tgg (great for the price)
