MacBook Air Hard Disk Caddy

Recently I upgraded my MacBook Air with a new Hard disk of bigger size. I am now left with the old one and am not sure how to reuse the old one. I heard that there are caddies available but they are expensive. I wanted to hear if you have any suggestions?

Also, if I have to buy a caddy, do you have any specific recommendations?

I guess these guys sell caddy?

Is it a hard drive or an ssd?

You do not need a mac specific caddy. Some companies will charge multiples in price for including the word apple or mac.

For example this product will work for 2.5 inch ssd/hdd. The key word you're after is enclosure.

    • Thank you. It is 125GB SSD. Is there a to find if the enclosure is right for this SSD? I am a bit novice in this area.

The general sizes for ssd's are either 2.5 inch or m.2. Your drive is likely 2.5inch. Can get a ruler or compare to other images.

That all said, you can get affordable 128/256gb usb thumb drives.

        • Thanks. Will do

The drives in MacBook Air models from late 2010 to 2017 (inclusive) use proprietary SSDs. They are not 2.5” SATA drives, and are also not M.2 SSDs (although Apple’s SSD connectors do somewhat resemble M.2 SSDs from a distance). If you want to read up on this, this is a very handy article.

The three options you have for your drive are:

    • Sell it on eBay/Gumtree/Facebook Marketplace etc
    • Purchase an enclosure for the old drive (which are very hard to find, due to OWC being the only manufacturer (that I am aware of) to sell SSDs with Apple’s proprietary SSD connector direct to consumers)
    • Keep it just in case your new drive unexpectedly malfunctions.

I think OWC sells enclosures for the MacBook Air SSDs, but you’ll find you’re hard pressed to find a drive enclosure that is a) in stock and b) compatible with your particular SSD.

    • Sellig on eBay is a good idea. Need to ensure that data is formatted. Possibly the 3rd option might be a good idea.

I listed selling your SSD as the first option, because there is a market for used Apple SSDs (particularly if your old SSD is a Generation 3 or Generation 4 SSD). My theory is that the market is driven by:

        • the fact that SSDs fail from time to time
        • Apple not providing replacement SSDs for some Macs anymore through Apple Stores.

A friend of mine tried to get a new SSD for their MacBook Pro (late 2013) from an Apple Store a couple of years ago, but were told that Apple don’t provide replacement SSDs for their particular laptop anymore and was told to look on eBay for a replacement SSD.

For reference, Generation 3 or Generation 4 128GB SSDs tend to sell for about $50-$80 on eBay, depending on the specific SSD model.

On a side note you can buy an adapter to plug a standard SSD drive into a Macbook with proprietary socket. They are about $15 to $20.
I bought one and it works fine.

        • Yeah makes sense. I need to cleanse the data before putting it up on the market.
