Boxing day sales for computer parts?

I was thinking of upgrading my computer with the following parts
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500 $221
Mobo: Asrock H61M/U3S3 B3 $75
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1333 $39
GPU: 1GB Nvidia GTX560 $195

found off the whirlpool wiki. I'm on a 2.66ghz dual core atm with an 8800GT and 2gb DDR2 ram. Playing BF3 is laggy at best…

Do you know if there are boxing day sales for computer parts? Or when we should anticipate the next price dip (i.e. new video card?

There is never a boxing day sale on PC parts, you only see boxing day sales on peripherals like headsets mice keyboards etc from chain stores

You're only option is to buy it at its current price, and the first new graphics card in the new year is the 7970 from AMD and that should only really effect the pricing on high end parts from Nvidia and the new 7000 series AMD cards will be out over the next 4 or so months, so if you wanna wait go for it the new Nvidia cards should be out sometime next year too but later than all the AMD cards

also I'd honestly recommend a 1600mhz ram (best sweet point for the 2500K can get a GOOD 8gb kit of that for $40-50)

and I wouldn't buy anything less than the 560 TI from Nvidia for battlefield and even that card can only play on high settings not ultra at 1920x1080 resolution when it comes to multi player

I also wouldn't use that low end motherboard either, I'd get one of the Z68 motherboards, specifically the Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3 if you're after probably the best bang for your buck Z68 board

I recently (a month ago) built a new rig and was coming from an old dual core 4830 build too for Battlefield 3 so I did a shit tonne of research into it

    I ended up with
    Intel i5 2500K
    Asrock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3
    GSkill Sniper (8GB 2x 4GB sticks) 1.25v 1600mhz CL9 SR2 kit
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler
Corsair HX650 PSU (modular, amazing performance and can handle SLI/Crossfire since its one of the few PSU's in that wattage or $135ish price range with 4 PCIe 8pin connectors and a shitload of other connectors)
Powercolor AMD HD 6870, this was a bargain for $169, and I plan on picking up another in the next few months for crossfire, it puts out impressive performance in crossfire, easily on par with a GTX 580 (you will get some problems with crossfire on some new games, or it not scaling right but generally its tops) as can be seen here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/301?vs=305

    • Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3
      sli'd 570gtx
      8gb cosair 1600mhz ram
      850watt cosair psu
      i5 quad clocked @ 2.9ghz or above

      your laughing.
that entire set up will cost less then $1200 delivered if you look around. it will also handle everything on max settings easily.

mafia 2 with physx maxed + everything else maxed performs at 48.5fps on the benchmark and if you have played that game on a pc, max physx destroys computers unless they have grunt.

a 6780 isnt really on par with a 580, its good in xfire but will still lose on more demanding games such as bf3. dont forget drivers play a huge roll in performance.

upgrading your psu is always wise when its that old (if your running those components that rig and its parts aren't new :P).

if you want cheap cards to xfire, get the 6950, they run well and can easily be clocked to run like 6970's for more performance!

    Thanks Gr3m1in!
Do you know why the HD 6780 pars the 580 on crossfire, but gets smashed by the 580 and even the 560 on BF3?

Also I have a PSU unit already, do you think I'll need to invest in another one for this? I have a 2.66ghz dualcore and 8800GT running!

    • whats your psu?

    • As stated depends on the power supply you have at the moment, if it's some 300W-430W generic shaw psu then it's a no go, look as corsair or antec for quality PSU's probably at the 500W+ mark (nothing over 700, amps is what you're after, not watts). Also previously stated was 1600MHZ ram/cheaper motherboards, personally I have no problem with cheap motherboards as long as they do what you need & have some room for an additional hard drive or maybe USB3 support if you think you'll need it down the line, otherwise the only thing more expensive boards will do is pretend they have super fast memory support or claim they do upto 3x faster usb handling..

1600MHZ vs 1333MHZ ram is nothing noticeable in terms of speed, but just make sure you're motherboard supports one or the other, don't get sucked into buying expensive memory!
