I'd still go with the Sony.
I would say skip the mid-range interchangeable lens cameras. Yes they are very capable, more capable than most users will ever need in fact, but that market segment is diminishing when mobiles become more capable and full-frame become more affordable.
My suggestions:
For compact: mobile phone
mid-range: Sony RX10iv
high-end: Full-frame from Canon/Nikon/Sony
Can I ask what are the advantages of a Full Frame camera to a mid range camera like the Sony A6400? Only asking as I'm new to photography and I just bought the A6400
bigger sensor, which means better low light performance.
Another advantage is in ultra-wide section — any focal length is multiplied by 1.5 to 1.6 in APCS cameras, e.g. 15mm becomes 24-25.6 mm (not so ultra wide), whereas it remains 15mm (which is ultra wide). Hence, APCS might not be optimal for landscape photography, but you can always buy ultrawide lens for APSC like 10-18mm canon.
There might be other advantages.
As hey1011 said.
Also consider that when you are buying an interchangeable lens camera you are not buying a camera, you are stepping into a trap of the camera companies of buying their system. So don't let the bargain-priced camera set you into the trap.
Chances are, you love photography or you feel you are not really that into it. For the former, you have the itch to buy more higher-priced lenses, upgrade to their full-frame series etc. For the latter your camera is collecting dust and you still reach out to your mobile phone for the daily snaps.
For the very few who are rational enough to love photography and only want to stay with entry-level gear, a brand is more important than a camera. Honestly, all those 3 major brands are very good and all have their loyal fans club for good reason. I will put my opinion in general but not specific to any models:
Sony is the most technologically advanced, the most 'geek' type of camera. And almost always looks best on paper with tech spec data too.
Nikon is the most conservative among the three, slower in putting new technology into their products but very often when they do it they do it right. Nikon has arguably the best handling and durability in the field that's why it is so popular among professionals when reliability is vital.
Canon has the best balance between those two, it has the technology and knows what real photographers want. On paper, some of their product may have the worst performance/price ratio comparing to other brands but you can be assured you are good when you are in the Canon system.
In my opinion, for a specific model, sony may be better than z50, and z50 may be better than canon. But for choosing a system if you want to upgrade to full-frame in the future it could be completely the other way around. That's why I am not keen on suggesting any entry level interchangeable lens cameras. Sony rx10iv is pretty cool for beginners, especially with the cashback from Sony now.
@cello: Thanks for the comparisons - very helpful and cheers for the advice. If I feel photography is my thing, I might upgrade in the future and sell my A6400 :)
Hi im a professional videographer, generally FF cameras have better low light performance and better dynamic range as others have said. More commenting so you don't feel like you made a wrong purchase. The a6400 is a fantastic camera, and as a hobbyist you probably won't ever need anything more than that. I've quite expensive cameras which i need to use for work but I enjoy most just using a canon m50 thats quite cheap ($600 on sale) in comparison to the professional cameras I have to use. Even low end cameras these days are so capable it doesn't really matter, just get out there and enjoy photography :)
@deets456: Haha yes I was trying to justify my purchase of the Sony A6400. Always wanted to try photography, so I'll just be happy with it and try it for the short-medium term and see how i go. Thanks for your advice
Great price! Cheaper than single lens kit.
I bought the single lens kit back in Dec and still getting the hang of it.
Showing up as 1879 for me
$1202.56 for me.
are you sure?
Yes, but now it's $1879
At $1202, it was shipped and sold by Amazon AU. The $1879 is for digiDirect.
Showing up as 1879 for me too.
It showed as $1202.56 when I clicked the link minutes after it was posted. Now showing $1879. May be sold out/expired already.
Someone must've bought multiples for scalping
single lens kit at $1080 is also a good deal:

For the twin lens kit, $1202 was a superb price! However, $1080 is still very good for the single lens kit.
There would be plenty of buyers who want the compact-only configuration of the 16-50mm lens.
You can see the size difference between the 2 lenses mounted on the Z50 here:

This or Sony A6400?
