Steel Wire Trimmer Head for Whipper Snipper: Thoughts?

I hate snipper cord. Doesn't matter what I do, I spend more time messing around with cord than I do cutting grass.

These look good. Has anyone bought one?

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133442315649?chn=ps&norover=1&mk…

I'm thinking it will only fit certain machines with the removable head like this:

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0014/0007/8403/products/cu…

and not the majority of electric ones in bunnings?

Is there a name for that style of head? Looking for budget models.

Cheers.

The thing you've linked here is for those machines that are used to clear bushes (forget what they're called), not for your regular line trimmers.

These would also defeat the purpose of a line trimmer, which is to use a material (nylon) which is strong enough to cut through grass, but will wear down when it hits other materials that you won't want to be scuffing up.

      brushcutter

  • Just purchase some good quality trimmer line and go up a thickness level if you can.

Second this and would also suggest a solid trimmer head like the below rather than a bump head or some complicated mechanical gizmo or anything that might fling parts off at speed.

I had a large, steep, rocky block and the original bump head disintegrated when it hit a rock (never found half the pieces).

Experimented with various types but couldn't beat the solid head.
They'll take a beating (just bounce off rocks) and you can fit as many pieces of whatever size cord suits the job.

Replacing the cord when required takes a few seconds (I'd carry an Allen key and a couple of spare cords) but I'd often go more than a tank of fuel on the thicker (4mm?) cord.

So what machines can this fit to?

I pulled apart my ozito electric but didn't look like there was any way to interchange anything which is why I'm posting.

OP, with all due respect this is your problem - you've got a very low end trimmer and its just not designed to have 3rd party heads put on it.

IMHO trying to get one is just throwing good money after bad.

As someone who lives on an acreage and so does a lot of line trimming I'd say you should either upgrade to a superior quality model or buy superior quality line for your existing trimmer. I will bet you're using cheap and nasty stuff that tends to last very poorly.

Don't fall for the poor advice of using the next size up line - it will often not fit in the trimmer or not spin as fast and so give worse results. The makers tend to advise the correct size for a reason, so just use a good quality twisted line and not the cheapest stuff - there's a huge difference.

Finally - UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES try and put a metal wire on any line trimmer. As others said the speed is far too much for this and it will break and send strands out in any given direction - they could do catastrophic damage to you or others and the financial and legal fallout from this could be immense. That metal head is just a disaster waiting to happen.

This is what I am trying to ascertain and what machines, or terminology, do allow. That's all. i know it's nobody's problem but my own, I'm just reaching out to the community for any info.

My investigation is more about the particulars of the units and which ones have the replacement heads than what they are used for.

          • @Daniel Plainview: I've found I do less line trimming since moving to acreage. Mainly fence lines if I don't get poisoning done thru winter and the spring sun gets grass growing quickly
But yes, got to use good gear (20+ year old Stihl bent shaft line trimmer for me)
            .

  • I bought Trail Blazer line trimmer, and so far it’s been excellent

where from & what sizes are available?
ive tried all the ones at bunnings and everything ends up jammed up in the bumphead & nothing seems to last. forever loading & playing with the bumphead and its annoying

      • +2

exactly. I spend more time than the whole job mucking around with cord.

The sizing of the line depends on your brand/model. I’ve got the Ego 56v line trimmer, and I got 2.4mm. Cost about $12 from the local lawn mower shop. Previously, I bought the Saxon brand from Bunnings and that was shit. Was constantly breaking, and getting jammed. But I’ve only used the new line a couple of times, and it’s been great

        • yeh the saxon stuff is what im having trouble with…have tried the 2mm & 3mm (my bumpfeed does both sizes) and both are shit
i think a 2.4mm will be worth a try…will keep an eye out for that brand

  • They deliberately make line trimmers so brushcutter heads won’t fit. I had a heavy job to do on grass so bought a 36V Ryobi brushcutter that also has a line trimmer head. Brushcutter works so well I can’t be bothered using line trimmer, although if I had to do a lot of edges against walls or concrete kerbing I might consider some style of wire brush

I'd be very very worried about small pieces of wire coming off and embedding itself in your legs or eyes.

    • Nothing comes off, just sends seeds and stuff flying so did get a pair of specs pretty early on.

  • I have used these critters https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNIVERSAL-SINGLE-FEED-ALLOY-BRUS… for years with a decent quality cord like PAL.
Semi bush environment and cord lasts well, domestic yard string will rot befor it breaks.

    • Can it go on any head?

  • I'm thinking I will get this one. Looks half decent and comes with both line spool and cutting head by the looks.

Also found the wire brush attachment cheaper on kogan than ebay or aliex:

    • Sorry thats generic junk with a 'house' name on it. Do you really want a trimmer with bullbars? As unless you're doing big areas they can be a bastard to use for fine work.

What exactly are you intending to use the trimmer for? i.e size of property, type of vegetation.

As going from an electric Ozito to a 2-stroke bullbar model is a curious choice IMHO.

      • I don't care about the ozito as you cannot change attachments on it as far as I can find.

I'm not 'going' from ozito electric to 2-stroke bullbar as much as going from piece of crap I can't use to a model that I can change attachments on, and the cheapest one I could find of that nature.

I don't care if it has a brush cutter head, line trimmer head, or any other head, as long as I can change it to find something that works for me and I can get the bloody job done for once.

Generic junk is what I need. Just 700sm house block.

    • It may go ok, I have a yardforce 2 stroke blower, it goes ok, is pretty easy to start, the handle to pull start did separate from the rope 2nd time I used it but that was an easy fix. Personally I think it will be a real PIA to operate, my bet is it's not balanced very well so you will be fighting the weight of the motor with the handlebards/shoulder strap. Have you used many 2 strokes before? They can be very temperamental to start, mixing fuel, fiddling with choke, priming, very different to your electric.

Also that wire brush is a terrible idea imo, hope you aren't using it in a backyard where people might walk barefoot because the wire will gradually break away and end up in your grass. Grass will most likely continually be caught in the wire, you'd want gloves on if you attempt to pull that out because the frayed wire will be a hazard.

      • Nothing gets caught. It's a beast.

  • I had the same issue fussing about with bump heads and ended up buying one of these;
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/saber-cut-power-cut-ii-two-heads…

It has worked well but I find they don't cut efficiently as conventional, you tend to rev the whipper a lot higher. On the upside, I don't go through as much cord.

    • Link not working?

      • Sorry, might be a NSW thing.

        Google "Sabercut Power Cut II".

It's so good that they had to mention "cut" twice… I think next years model will have "Pro" tacked on.

        • …Sabercut Power Cut Procut IV

"Cutting the edge out of edgy!"

  • For anyone wondering, here is my first use. It is pretty rough, but there was a lot of growth.

This thing has changed my life.

Well I love to tell people 'I told you so'….and so enjoy the positive results from it while they last - but by the same token please be sure to think of me when you're either in Outpatients getting a piece/s of the wire removed from yourself - or you're looking at a very nasty lawsuit as the wire embedded itself into another person. As it's not a question of whether each steel wire breaks - as they are guaranteed to - but just when and who happens to be in the wrong place.

Why you would use such a stupid and clearly dangerous attachment thats not suitable for your trimmer instead of just using half decent plastic line is beyond me - but as I said enjoy it while you can You were warned.

    • bit of a rough job mate…in a hurry to get to beer-o'clock?

  • Why you would use such a stupid and clearly dangerous attachment thats not suitable for your trimmer

    Seems it is suitable.

If it's stupid and it works, is it still stupid?

    • As Chris Rock once joked,"You can drive a car with your feet, that don't make it a good f$£%ing idea!"

As I said before, you seemed to want to buy that junk regardless of what folks said, so enjoy.

  • Two years on and still working well. Was just google shopping for a new wire brush and came across this post in results.

Technique has gotten a lot better. You're best to walk along your line in the direction of the spin rather than front on and it does a nice clean job.

Needless to say, no metal splinters, no lawsuits and no hospital visits. I've used 2 brushes in 2 years. The smaller 6" one is definitely a better choice for closer shave.
