If my employer requires me to obtain a medical certificate for a sick day, and I have to pay out of my pocket for the GP, can that be claimed off my tax because I’ve been told nobody can claim medical expenses anymore on your taxes ?
Can out of Pocket Expense to See A GP for a Medical Certificate Be Claimed on Tax?

Unfortunately, not all Doctors bulk bill, especially in regional areas.
No, such expense is considered a private expense, kinda like mileage to your principal place of work.
if you are required by your employer to wear a uniform that’s tax deductible so what’s the difference
It depends on the uniform, not all are tax deductible.
One's employer require one to work at their principal place of work. This is a requirement but it's not something that can be tax deductible.
required by your employer to wear a uniform that’s tax deductible so what’s the difference, if your employer requires you to bring them something surely that is a tax deduction
Yes, uniform is specifically allowed as the tax deductible but medical is not and that's the difference.
edit : can afford to drive a BMW but want to claim on tax deduction for GP fees? You're a true blue OzB member!
Some chemists can do medical certificates I believe….
eg: https://www.priceline.com.au/pharmacy-services/absence-from-… and I've seen signs in-store at Chemist Warehouse too
From memory, CW only charged $20 for a certificate…
Bulk billing clinics do it for free.
Not everyone has a bulk billing clinic near them and if they do they might not have available appointments - chemist is a 2nd option if bulk billing gp isn't available.
and if they do they might not have available appointments
ones near us don't take appointments, you just roll up…
@SF3: Looks like it yielded quite well
Darn expensive too. Was charged $70 years ago at my local chemist. Probably cheaper to just go to a GP :D
Some employers don't accept med certs from chemists. Make sure that you find out before hand.
can that be claimed off my tax
No…
I dont think thats the answer he wants to hear…. just say 'yes' and we will move on.
Could ‘lie’ to give OP confirmation bias…
OP takes sick leave, employer asks for medical certificate to “proof” it was legit, OP feels forced to goto GP to get checked up, OP feels s/he needs a way to claim money back. jv saids no, and didn’t bold his comment.
/thread
see if they accept a covid test result
mines require a covid test if i take a sick dayI've been able to use a stat dec as I was unable to get an appointment.
I guess it would depend how many days you were sick. (3 days sick, mid last year)https://www.fairwork.gov.au/leave/sick-and-carers-leave/paid…
Types of evidence needed for sick / carer’s leave
Medical certificates or statutory declarations are examples of acceptable forms of evidence. While there are no strict rules on what type of evidence needs to be given, the evidence has to convince a reasonable person that the employee was genuinely entitled to the sick or carer’s leave. You can certainly claim it. The tax office is likely to deny your claim, and may audit you.
You then have the option to pursue your claim in court.
This is how many existing deductions were established, though usually it was a union fighting the fight. The claims aren’t always successful:
