Moving a Spa, Any Ideas on Cost?

Hi everyone,

Background: My inlaws are about to purchase a property, and the owner said they could remove the spa or give it to us free, its in working condition. We haven't given them our choice just yet. The inlaws definitely don't want it, but my wife and I have been keen to have one for some time, but never spent the money on one as there are other priorities. Anyways, I don't want to put a fake ad and muck tradies around, so just putting out the question to see if anyone had an experience moving their spa between houses or has any other thoughts to share.

Question: Cost of moving a spa (approx 2.1m x 2.1m), less than 5km distance between the houses. Access through garage to get the spa, but i have no idea on the complexities of rotating it 90 deg and moving it.

Edited: It's just a spa, not a "swim spa" as per my original post. That was a lack of understanding on my part not realising the distinction, thanks for pointing it out. 2.1m x 2.1m. Rotating it 90 deg because we only have 1.2m wide side entry.

  • Are you sure it's not considered part of the property so the owner shouldn't give it away?

    • The spa is empty, and the owner said it belongs to him. He was happy to take it away to sell the house, and just as happy to leave it behind.

For anything bigger than a normal (5-6 person) spa, you'll probably need a crane. Especially if there are any obstacles like steps or embankments. It shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars since you wouldn't need it for very long. As long as there's somewhere on the street to park it, and no trees or structures in the way, it should be fairly straightforward.

Source: we almost had to go down this route for our normal spa, but they just managed to get it through the double garage doors and up two steps. Anything bigger (i.e. a swim spa) would have been impossible!

ETA: I just noticed the dimensions - this is definitely not a swim spa! It's the same size as my 5-6 person spa. In which case, you should be fine with a few guys and a trolley. Some spa places might do the move for you, using their spa trolley. They might need you to take photos of the area (we had to send thm a walk-through video) so they can assess the route and determine how many people they need, etc.

Thank you for the reply. Sorry - lack of understanding with the terminology, its just a spa. Thanks for pointing it out, I have edited my post.

Glad to know its just a few hundred, as opposed to a figure in the thousands! Your reply was very helpful, thanks again!

If you were going to purchase one anyway, I'd imagine moving it will be cheaper than buying a new one.
If the thing is a 2.1m square, why do you need to rotate it 90 degrees? Or do you mean flip it on it's side to get it around a corner? Also those dimensions would just be a regular spa pool, not a swim spa. Swim spa's are rectangular and normally around 4m long so you can actually swim in it.

If the dimensions are correct, going by something like this, it should only be a couple of hundred kilo empty. A person on each corner would be able to lift it, hire a car trailer for a few hours and it's done….If access is going to be a pain, handball the job for sure.

    • Thank you for the reply. Sorry - lack of understanding with the terminology, its just a spa. Basically like the one in your link.

Just meant flipping it over because we only have 1.2m wide gap between house and the fence. Thanks for the advice, definitely sounds the way to go!

  • What sort of swimming are you doing in a 2.1x2.1 spa?

    • My bad on the lack of knowledge on the terminology, it is just a "spa." Edited the post now to remove further confusion :)
