Diploma in IT Vs Certificate 4 in IT

So the price difference between doing a diploma of IT at Victoria University and doing a certificate 4 in IT at RMIT is $7900 vs $800.

There is a *10 difference in price so my question is, is a diploma in IT *10 more valuable for attaining a job (Helpdesk) and can a cert 4 in IT not get you a helpdesk job?

Thanks

    Start with the cert iv.
IT generalist qualifications aren’t very useful, except to say you have a bit of aptitude and can complete a course.
Depending on the role, industry Certs might be more useful, but so is some work experience.

    • I didn’t see your past question saying you already have a cert Iv. No point at all in getting another, or a diploma really. If you are struggling to get a job, look at other avenues besides another generalist qualification.

    • What even is “IT”? Wikipedia makes it sound like just inputting and using data on computers, makes it sound very clerical and boring.

      • As education and government call it "ICT".

  • in certain places, the diploma is seen as 'bare minimum entry level qualification'

  • attaining a job (Helpdesk)

I have my doubts for such job prospects (but good luck to you), unless you need to physically handle equipment, and with cloud computing gaining ground this will further reduce the need to be onsite.

I thought a significant amount of such roles has already been offshored…

    • Agree, and unless you move into a specialty your pay will remain quite limited. You might also get comfortable and not bother expanding into different areas. I'd look into the programming Cert IV/diploma, keep studying at home, learn some Linux (can easily self learn) and apply for junior dev roles. There'll be much more opportunities when you can code, it'll also pay better.

Diploma makes no sense to me. If you're paying and spending the time to do a Diploma, you might as well do a Bachelor's degree in IT.

Cert IV might make some sense in terms of getting your foot in the door. Might be worth equipping yourself with some industry certifications depending on the area you want to go into (e.g. web development, networking, support…etc.)

Given that you want to go into helpdesk, I'd probably say that this would require more hands-on experience with troubleshooting or administration than anything you'd get out of a degree course.

Great advice. Fancy pieces of paper get you a long way (Mcse/cisco/dba/citrix etc etc) but cost stupid amounts thes edays

    • As far as I know Apple don’t ask for qualifications to work for their phone help desk. And you can work from home. You follow scripts and elevate real problems. Maybe OP wants to be the person real problems are elevated to?

  • so what is in the diploma these days - is it just 2x cert 4's is 1600… im sure to complete the diploma isnt over 6000 on its own is it?

did my diploma in PC/network support in the 90s and Im sure it wasnt 800 for the lot

Cert 4 is like quarter of a diploma and a diploma is like a quarter of a degree

Do some Cisco and Microsoft certifications

  • good a job in network management

  • sorry i got a job in network management

  • Certificate IV can continue on into a Diploma (can get credits towards it). Though I would recommend studying at an institute that offers both so it's easier to continue on. Best to discuss with the place(s) you want to study at for a better idea =)

I'm currently studying a Cert IV in Cyber Security and our teacher discussed this at length last night. Certificate can gain credits for the Diploma, a Diploma can count towards a degree. It's all tied together.
